Saints suffer at hands of Poets for 27-25 loss

The Selma High Saints dropped a heart breaker last night against Sidney Lanier 27-25. The Saints put forth a valiant effort, but fell short in the end due to their inability to convert two-point conversion’s.

The Poets opened up the scoring with a 65 yard drive that resulted in a 11 yard touchdown pass from Terrance Singleton to Nyrobi Dingle to put the Poets up 7-0 after the extra point sailed through the uprights.

Selma got on the board midway through the first quarter after a 62 yard drive by he Saints set up a one yard touchdown on the quarterback sneak by Jai Miller. The extra point was good to tie the score 7-7 with 4:33 left in the first quarter.

The Poets came right back with a 53 yard drive that set up a one yard touchdown run by Jerrell Broughton. The extra point was good once again to put the Poets up by seven at 14-7.

The Saints went three and out on the ensuing possession, and Lanier took over possession on their own 17 yard line. On second and eight on Laniers 19 yard line Miller stepped up and hauled in an interception on the Selma 36 yard line. Selma was unable to turn the turnover into anything productive, and the Poets got the ball back on their own 30 yard line.

The Poets got on the board once again, when Shamus Tyus had a 32 yard return to give the Poets the ball on the Selma 18 yard line. Lanier marched the ball down to the one yard line, where they were able to punch it in on the quarterback sneak, and take the lead 21-7 after converting the extra point.

Lanier got on the board first in the second half on a 80 yard fumble return by Henry Taylor for Lanier. The ensuing extra point was no good, and the score stood 27-7 in favor of Lanier.

After recovering a fumble by Lanier on their own 12 yard line Selma finally got back in the ball game. Miller hooked up with Brian Fails for the 12 yard touchdown pass to make the score 27-13 after the two-point conversion failed.

On Selma Highs first possession of the fourth quarter they marched the ball 86 yards down the field to pick up their third score of the game. After a costly penalty that set up fourth and goal on the 20 yard line for Selma High Miller hooked up with Jarvis Wormley for his second touchdown of the night to put the Saints down by eight after the two-point conversion failed.

With 4:20 left in the fourth quarter the Saints got another touchdown on a 35 yard pass from Miller to Herbert Allen to put the Saints down by two after the two-point conversion failed. The Poets ran out the clock on the ensuing possession, and win the ball game 27-25.

The offensive leaders for the Saints were, Jai Miller with 217 passing yards on eight completions, and two touchdowns. He also ran for 47 yards, and another touchdown. Miguel Harris had three receptions for 125 yards. Jarvis Wormley had one reception for 20 yards and a touchdown. Herbert Allen had one reception for 33 yards and a touchdown. Brian Fails had one reception for 12 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively for the Saints Dontae Allen had 11 tackles, Miller had two tackles and an interception, and Donald Steele had six tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Saints drop to 2-3 on the year, and they take on Robert E. Lee next week at 7:30.
