Thomas Edwards Sr.

Thomas &uot;Turkey and Green Man&uot; Edwards Sr., 88, of Jones, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 at a local hospital.

Services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Brien Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Joann Sharpe officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Cora Lee Edwards; seven sons, Thomas (Mary) Edwards, Calvin (Louise) Edwards of Selma, Jesse (Carolyn) Edwards of Chicago, Ill., Clarence Edwards, Lovell (Gloria) Edwards of Birmingham, Omega (Carrie) Edwards of Detroit, Mich., and Freddie (Candy) Edwards of Atlanta, Ga.; four daughters, Callie (Robert) Walker, Vera (Elder James) Beal all of Selma, Ruby (Rev. Clinton) Peeples of Jones and a special granddaughter, Denise Harris (Allen) Wilson, raised as a daughter (by Thomas and Cora Edwards; four sisters, Mattie Sturdivant, Mary Ellabee, Lela Huston and Earlene Covington; 50 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; five sons-in-law; seven daughters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; eight sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by one son, Melvin C. Clay, one daughter, Annie L. Harris, two brothers, Robert and Napoleon Edwards and a sister, Georgia Brown.

Active pallbearers are Masonic Local Lodge #238.

Honorary pallbearers are grandsons.

Family visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home.

The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Edwards was a member of Brien Chapel AME Church, for over 50 dedicated years, where he served on the Steward Board. He was president of the Homade Society and a member of the Little Star of Bethel Society and of the Masonic Lodge #238.

Mary R. Bell

Mary R. Bell, 66, of Selma, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 in Selma.

Services are at 12 noon, Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Chapel of Lewis Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Coat officiating. Burial will follow in Sidney Chapel Church Cemetery, Consul, with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include four brothers, John C. Bell, Joe Bell Jr., Clarence Bell and Cecil Bell; three sisters, Nettie B. James, Pecola Hendricks and Marie J. Bell; four nephews; and two nieces.

Active pallbearers are family members and friends.

Honorary pallbearers are family members and friends.

Lester Aubrey Smith

Lester Aubrey Smith, 81, of Lake Martin, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Eclectic Unite Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Ramsey and the Rev. William Bugna officiating and Jeffcoat Funeral Home of Tallassee directing.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Evelyn McQueen Smith; two daughters, Shirra Smith Rogers (Hoyt) of LaGrange, Ga., and Melanie Smith Culpepper (Bob) of Pleasant; one son, Lester Aubrey Smith Jr., (Leslie) of Selma; seven grandchildren, Heather Jones, Wendy Rogers, Jennifer and Trey Culpepper, Joshua Ashton and Trent Smith; and one great-grandson, Mason Jones.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born in Tallassee, the son of the late Lester and Icey Smith. After graduation from Elmore County Schools, he enrolled at Alabama Polytechnic Institute and graduated in 1942 with a degree in agricultural science. He served in World War II, 101st Airborne. In 1945 he moved to Selma and worked for the Soil Conservation Service.

In 1951 he became assistant superintendent of the Black Belt Experiment Station in Marion Junction and in 1957 he was promoted to superintendent, the position he held until 1985 when he and Mrs. Smith retired to Lake Martin.

Mr. Smith is a member of Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame, and was the Progressive Farmer’s Man of the Year in Service to Alabama Agriculture in 1985.

Debra Diane Marshall

Debra Diane Marshall, 36, of Selma, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at a local hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Darryl Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Marshall; one daughter, Tracy Marshall; two brothers, Willie Marshall and O.T. Marshall; five sister, Emma Bennett, Barbara Grimes, Mary Smith (George), Juanita Marshall and Brenda Marshall; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Marshall.

Active pallbearers are Arthur Grimes, Matthew Smith, George Smith Jr., Fred Johnson, Lorenzo Peterson and Anthony Marshall.

Paul Winford Hale

Paul Winford Hale, 78, of Selma, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 at a local nursing home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Sonny Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Glenn Hale, James Timothy Hale and Robin Dale Hale; step-son, Curtis Floyd Gibbs Jr.; step-daughters, Linda Diane Hix, Patricia Ann Gilchrist, Sandra Lea McClendon and Debbie Carol McClure; a sister, Linda (Roger) Fuller; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Paul Stanley Hale.

Active pallbearers are John Jones, Walter Edwards, Allen Kendrick, Bruce Fuller, Boyd Fuller and Chad Fails.

Honorary pallbearers are the staff of Dunn’s Nursing Home.

Wilma J. Boykin, 76, of Selma, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 at her home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father Carroll Plourde officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include special nieces, Sabrina Jones and Eunice L. Mason; one nephew; eight great-nieces; and five great-nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Doris Jenkins Mixon

Doris Jenkins Mixon, 53, of Selma, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 in Miami, Fla.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oak Hill, with Dr. Julius Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, Karey Mixon; mother, Gladys Jenkins; two sons, Wendell Jenkins and Christopher Mixon; one daughter, Carmalinda Jenkins; four brothers, John (Jessie) Ramsey, Booker (Beatrice) Jenkins, Julius Jenkins and Jimmie (Ovetta) Jenkins; one sister, Patricia (Anthony) Robinson; one sister, Patricia (Anthony) Robinson; two grandchildren; one son-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and six sisters-in-law.

Survivors include two sons, Jessie (Vickie) Boggs of Selma and James (Sherry) Boggs of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; two daughters, Fannie M. Hasberry of Marion Jct., and Pearlie (Eugene) Walker of Detroit, Mich.; one brother, Elijah Thomas of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; four sister, Elnora Thomas, Ellen Caldwell of Selma, Betty Kennie and Rosie Lee Thomas of Marion; one brother-in-law, James Kennie of Marion; one sister-in-law, Lucile Thomas of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Sis. Ella Lee Bell of Selma.

Joe Darrison Pressley Sr.

Joe Darrison Pressley Sr., died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002.

Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at First Baptist Church of West End in Birmingham, with the Rev. Ronnie Sledge officiating and Roberts Funeral Home of Birmingham directing.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Pauline Pressley, three sons, Paul E. Pressley (Lula) of Decatur, Joe D. Pressley Jr. (Glenda) of Bessemer and Michael K. Pressley (Tina) of Pinson; six sisters, Shirley Brown of Selma, Eleanor Campbell (Willie) of San Jose, Calif., Wanda Evans (Jerry), Debra Stewart (Jonny), Brenda Benton (Don) all of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kathy Dailey (John) of Lexington, Ky.; five brothers, Joseph Pressley (Bell), Theodore Pressley (Shirley) all of Detroit, Mich., Authur Pressley (Carrie) of Annapolis, Md., Jerome Pressley (Barbara) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Martin Pressley (Jeanette) of Long Island, N. Y.; one uncle, Samuel Colley Sr. (Hattie) of Detroit Mich.; three grandchildren, Jojuan L. Pressley, Helen E. P’ressley, and Ayana B. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Sr. and Essie Pressley, grandparents, Robert and Louzia Colley, Joe and Eliza Pressley, a brother, Louis Pressley, Jr., and an aunt, Joella Colley.

Mr. Pressley, was born April 2, 1935 in Burnsville. He was raised and attended school in Selma. He served his country from 1955-59 in the United States Navy. He moved to Birmingham in 1959. He was a loyal member of First Baptist Church of West End where he served on the Trustee Board. He attended Parker High School and Lawson State Community College. Mr. Pressley was formerly employed with Connors Steel for many years. He retired from BellSouth and Tucker Barber Shop.

He was a member of the Jones Valley Elks Lodge #14 and Wood’s Joy Masonic Lodge #752.

He was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend to all he met.

Napoleon K. Davis

Napoleon K. Davis, 92, of Camden, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 at a Camden hospital.

Graveside services are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Camden Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a daughter, Ettie Louise Davis of Albany, Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife Sallie Davis, two brothers and one sister.

Johnny Golston

Johnny Golston, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Dallas, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 in Detroit, Mich.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
