Like many Selma residents, Monique Summers has been disturbed by reports of break-ins and thefts coming out of parts of the city.

Friday morning she decided to do something about it.

Summers, a dental assistant who works at an office on Jeff Davis Avenue, was told by one of her patients that her car was being burglarized.

Summers, who said her car had been burglarized on a previous occasion, wasn’t about to let it happen again.

After leaving the office, she saw a man police later identified as Christopher Surles, 21, of Selma, running down the street, carrying a CD player he had stolen from her vehicle.

That’s when Summers sprang into action.

She jumped into her car and chased after the suspect, eventually ending up in an alleyway on St. Phillips Street.

She said that during the chase, Surles was running along the sidewalk at one point.

Summers said he eventually ran to a house close to the location from which the chase started. He was then apprehended by police.

Asked the reasons for her action, Summers said simply, &uot;I was upset.&uot;

Surles was charged with unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle. He was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after police discovered a small bag of marijuana in his possession.

Said Summers, &uot;Kids like that seem to have nothing better to do. They really need something to occupy their time.&uot;

Summers praised police for their quick response.
