Why we choose Barack Obama
Published Sunday, November 2, 2008
There are times when what is better for the community may fly in the face of individual wants and ideological comfort.
This year’s presidential race is one of those times.
There are many who admire the GOP nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona. He has given most of his life to his country. He fought in an unpopular war many years ago. The enemy captured, tortured and nearly killed him before he was able to return home to service in the Senate.
Now, he has offered himself for the highest position in our national government. As the standard bearer of the Republican Party, his platform reflects those interests of the party, which are in many ways are removed from agriburbs, such as the cities and towns of the Alabama Black Belt.
For example, McCain wants to make the Bush Administration’s tax cuts permanent. These cuts have hurt the U.S. economy by increasing the deficit and providing tax cuts — 45 percent of which went to the top 5 percent of earners in the U.S. On the other hand, most of the people in this area remain at the bottom 80 percent, which received only 22 percent of the Bush tax cuts.
McCain’s running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, at one point, gave some hope that McCain would reach out to the common people by selecting a woman who was a former small-town mayor; a family person with the same common concerns as those of us who live in smaller cities across this county. But we have found her lacking in empathy and substance.
We have no illusions about the Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama. He is not a savior of the poor and downtrodden. He is a part of the Democratic Party system that many see as too tied to government intervention in their lives.
But the policies advocated by Obama are more palatable and would benefit the people of the Alabama Black Belt more than those of McCain’s. For example, he would seek to have Bush’s tax cuts repealed and eliminate income taxes for people over 65 who earn $50,000 or less. Many elderly in Dallas County alone would benefit from that move.
Additionally, Alabama Congressman Artur Davis, who has helped Obama’s campaign, has said if elected, Obama would send a study group to this region to help us work out a solution to our future.
For those concerned about Obama’s lack of experience, we point to the choice of his running mate, Joe Biden, who has also given up much personally, though not in similar ways to McCain, in service to his country.
Obama speaks directly to small towns and the poor families — the makeup of this region of Alabama — as he talks about his plans and hope and a new day.
Because of these reasons, The Selma Times-Journal endorses Barack Obama for the presidency.

No good eason to choose a man with no work history and no management exeprience at all. Selecting Barrack Obama or selecting a president based on race and on party only is so risky for the USA.
What did Obama do for the USA? No, then he should not be rewarded.

Congratulations Selma! You have come a long way, baby!!! I am moved by your openness to social and political progress! I am old enough to remember the bad old Selma of the civil rights days.
To the person making the first comment: McCain has been on the government's payroll all his life -- first in the military, then as a Congressman, finally as a Senator. He has never held a payroll job in the private sector, never run a business or organization, and relies on his wife's inherited wealth (and her work as chairman of the beer distributing company she inherited from her father) for the income that has purchased those 7 houses. In the 19th & 20th centuries in England, McCain would be called a "gentleman" -- one who did not have to earn his living directly by his labor or the results of his business acumen because others take care of it. He was educated by the government (Annapolis) and he graduated among the bottom 5 students of his class. He has always benefitted from government-sponsored health insurance, even as a child because his father was a lifetime Navy officer. It seems to me that McCain has been "on the dole" his entire life and is the least fit to understand the needs and lives of us every day Americans. John McCain has already received his "reward" and then some from the taxpaying American public.
The election is not about "rewarding" the candidate, it is about taking care of ourselves and our country and selecting the most qualified person, regardless of race. One who has our best interests in the forefront. Barack Obama was born into an every day American family and bootstrapped himself through college and law school through scholarships and student loans. He has demonstrated a steadiness and focus, in addition to his intelligence, that I find admirable. I am voting for him because he is serious and the problems this country faces require more serious consideration that "rewarding" a candidate for serving in the military.

The rag has finally shown its true color! And I do not trust Mr. Obama! His so-called rhetorical skills and charisma do not impress me.

No One...Black or White....named Barack Obama should run the USA!!! It's just too close to Osama Bin Laden.
I don't really like McCain or Obama but I will vote for McCain because he fought for us and knows & cares about what our troops are going through!! Any real American, Black or White, would see that & vote McCain.
Selma...don't vote for color....NAACP Leave!!!!!

Call it for what it is. The preceived "POWER" is crumbling. People are looking beyond hue tones. Some people anyway.

Sunshine: Why? Because you are an Obama fan?
I think it's disgusting. The media should stay unbiased and report on ALL OF THE CANDIDATES, so that we can make an informed and educated decision.
Instead, we are getting nothing but propaganda and bias reporting from every media outlet, including our beloved STJ. How sad.
I pray for our country, the decline has and will be calculated.
Congrats.

It has been alleged that presidential aspirant Barack Obama is ineligible to become president because, it is claimed, he was not born in the United States, but rather born in Kenya to a Kenyan father, making him a Kenyan citizen.
The story has gained credence for several reasons.
1) His paternal grandmother in Kenya has reportedly been audiotaped** saying that she was in the delivery room when Obama was born.
2) Obama has refused to release an official birth certificate. Instead he has released a "certification of live birth," which not only shows evidence of tampering — Obama's half-sister's name Maia appears under his name — but wouldn't normally be considered a legal document anyway.
3) Further, Obama will not release his medical records or his records from Occidental or Harvard College. It is speculated that he will not release these records because they indicate he is not a citizen and may, in fact, have applied for some type of U.S. government aid for foreign students.

STJ.. This election is not about the economy or what "hue" one's skin is!!! It's about what mindset does one want controlling this great country!!, a Muslim or a Christian!!
Selma, shake yourself free of the prejudice and vote The Word.
How soon 'till we're fighting a religious battle in our streets?
STJ.. remove my comments if you will, but, you're part of the problem!! See the Light!!

JUST A FEW STATEMENTS MR.OBAMA HAS MADE....VOTE SMART TOMORROW!!!
1 ILLEGAL immigrants should be given drivers licenses
2 If following an attempt at an abortion, the baby is born alive, we should kill him or her
3 Our new president should immediately hold a conference for the leaders of all Muslim nations so we can listen to their concerns
4 A "Marriage" can be between a man and woman, or a man and man, or a woman and woman
5 If America wants to be respected in the world, we can't drive our SUVs, and eat as much as we want .
6 After September 11, I immediately thought it was important to understand what causes such madness.
7 People in small towns in Pennsylvania and the Mid-West are bitter, which explains why they cling to guns and religion
8 Even though doubling capital gains tax will result in less revenue for the government we should do it anyway. Its about fairness...some people make too much money
9 A church whose magazine publishes a claim in June 2007 that Jews invented a bomb which only targets Africans and Arabs is actually not that controversial.
10 We cannot continue to rely on the US military to achieve homeland security. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as WELL-FUNDED.
11 We should commit the US to cutting global poverty in half by 2015 at an estimated cost to US taxpayers of around $800 billion.
12 Its unreasonable to expect a nominee for President to vet the people he/she asks to conduct a search for a Vice President
13 We should slow down our development of future combat systems for the US Military
14 Its OK to make a fundamental promise to use public finance during the general election in order to win a Primary, and then to break the promise at the start of the general election because its all about winning.
15 Its OK for a candidate for president not to pay parking tickets for 20 years, as long as he/she pays them off at least two weeks before announcing a run for president
16 We should never criticize the words spoken by a candidate's spouse, even if that spouse is actively giving speeches promoting the candidate, talking about policy and other political issues
17 A church whose Senior Pastor condemns the US government for creating HIV to kill African- Americans, is actually not that controversial
18 For a Presidential candidate's National Campaign Chairperson to compare a Primary between an African- American male and a blond white woman, to OJ Simpson murdering Nicole is OK
19 Child sex-abusers should be considered for early release
20 Iran is not a threat...it spends less than one hundredth of what the US spends on Military

To Scottsdalebubble: You are right on point. I too remember the days back in the 60's. Selma has come a long way but from some of the other post has a long way to go. When the media talk, whether anyone like it or not people listen and notice. The STJ is a window or the heartbeat of the area as far as how the public see's life in the community. It's very pleasing to see that they choose to look ahead and not backwards on such an important matter for all Americans.

Omig*d!! The racist wingnuts are creeping back out of the primordial ooze! It's like being in a 1950-1960's time-warp with you people! Once again, you are speaking out of fear and ignorance (you predicted the same thing if the Civil Rights and Voting acts passed. Have those predictions come true for you?). If you would read Obama's book, "The Audacity of Hope", you would understand that little of what you state is true about what he thinks or wants to do -- it's just some made-up wingnut slime that you take at face value because it justifies your prejudices and fears. Have some faith in your fellow Americans, even if they aren't just like you.
As Stephen Colbert says, "The truth does tend to have a liberal bias."
Oh, and by the way, it's the right wing that has been most vociferous in opposing the public financing of campaigns and campaign spending limits. And they/you were correct: it does interfere with free speech. The average donation to the Obama campaign has been $87. That is because a huge number of your fellow Americans know it is in their best interests to participate in political campaigns, not just to let the fat-cats pay for them and then, in back rooms, write the legislation so it favors their industries not the interests of the American people. We know how well that has worked for us recently.
Finally, a majority of our fellow Americans will vote for a candidate who represents their interests, not fat cat interests.

Twas the night before elections And all through the town
Tempers were flaring Emotions all up and down !
I, in my bathrobe With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV Tired of political crap.
When all of a sudden There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window Saw Obama and his boys
They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others Who had not worked a day !!!!!!
He snatched up my money And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon As I gagged from the stink
He then rallied his henchmen Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out To tear my country apart !!!!!!
On Fannie, on Freddie, On Biden and Ayers ! On Acorn, On Pelosi ' He screamed at the pairs !!!!!!
They took off for his cause And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation Who wouldn't stand up and fight !!!!!!
So I leave you to think On this one final note -
IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE !!!!!!

Wow...How sad...People, remember the law of the harvest, you reap what you sow. Spew hatred and hatred will return to you. Spew lies and lies will return to you. Judge and you will be judged! The truth hurts sometimes and change is sometimes scary but a good thing. It seems to me that some of the above posters are afraid of change and afraid of truth. By their comments, they are easily led by those who wish to lead by fear. The righteous will always win, always!
Evil may persist for only so long. Then, that too will pass.

While it is the 21st century, racism is still alive in Selma. It is disheartening to know that such hatred is so embedded in this community. However, it is also rewarding to know that God’s Word continues to be faithful. We must continue to pray that God will remove the hatred from the hearts of those that are used by satan to continue his reign of lies, and evil doing. We must also pray that those persons being guided by satan will truly give their lives to Christ. One thing that we know is that a “true” Christian cannot hate a person. A true Christian is Christ like, and there is nothing that resembles Christ in the messages posted to this website by some of the writers. It also shows that as Christian, we have so much work to do, not only in the community, but also in the Church. President Obama is covered by God. God’s grace and mercy shall rain down on him. NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST PRESIDENT OBAMA SHALL PROSPER, AND EVERY EVIL WORD SPOKEN AGAINST HIM SHALL BE CONDEMNED.
To those persons filled with hatred, and will perpetrate false statement against President Obama, do know that you will one-day stand before the “Father” and you will answer for your words. I pray that you will acknowledge God’s faithfulness, and humble yourself to God’s Word. Resist the devil and he shall flee, but if you give him a crack in your life, he will consume you.
The time has come for the citizens of this country who are consumed with hatred, to put down the hatred. To ask God to enter into your life and give you a Clean Heart, and a renewed spirit. Do know he is faithful and just to forgive you and your sins and cleanse you of all unrighteousness. His arms are open for you, and he is saying I am giving you another chance to get it right. Please listen to him and do not turn away.
I am speaking life into this community, Selma and America will not die, but rise to be what God has ordained it to be. Satan will not win, not now, not this time.
God Bless you, God Bless America, and God Bless President Obama.

Hey Apt 105C GWC Homes! I am sure you will vote for Obama because you will always have free housing and probably more welfare money with him in. It pisses me off that hard working individuals like myself will have more money taken out of our taxes to support people like you that won't work. I bet your house is probably nicer than mine and you probably have a better vehicle. At least I have earned everything I have.

Hey Tired of This Town, when you give your life to Christ you will not worry about what some else has. Your will find peace. You will know that what God has for you, is for you.
Don't let satan use you. Search your soul, no matter how deep and find the desire to want to see a better Selma for all people, even those living in public housing. If we stop and work together, we can create an envoronment where business will flock to Selma and everyone can have a decent quality of life, even you. Remember God loves you and he will supply all of your needs if you confess your sins and commit to Him.
I pray God's Anointing on you and your life.

Hey Selma, I am a Christian and I have been saved, thank you. What I don't understand is why are a majority of the blacks here voting for Obama? Is it because he is black? Truth be told, he is half black and half white. So you could actually say he is white. Right. This election is about keeping christianity in this country. Obama is not a Christian. So if you are so godly, please vote McCain/Palin.

One of the ten commandments is "thou shall not bare false witness”. You stated that Obama is not a Christian, how do you know that? Do you think that just because you repeat rumors that makes it true? Do you think that just because you repeat what you hear from Bill ORiley and Rush Limbaugh, that it is truth? These are tricks of satan. I am not going to question your faith in God, only you can search your soul and answer that question. I recognize that the Blood of Jesus will cover a multitude of sins. It is important that you remember that African Americans have always voted for White candidates since they received the right to vote, and so have you. Race has never been an issue for African Americans. God’s will-will be done. The time has however come for you and a few other to a search for the God in you. I recognize that I need the Lord, and I ask that He guide my footsteps and control my mouth. I ask that he have mercy on me, lest I stumble and fall. For you, I say search your soul, and if God gives you peace in your comments, and your actions, then it is ok. If you can see Christ in your remarks, your actions, your heart then I say to you get a check up from the soul and spirit up. If God calls you home tonight, the question is, will He see Himself in you. Not color, but soul, heart and spirit. Think about it. You only need to answer YES to Him.

Alot of these comments are so ignorant that they end up being hilarious. You bible thumpers need to get over it.
People in Selma spend so much time praying, ranting and raving religious nonsense.. I wonder....as bad as Selma is these days, nobodys listening.
I'm happy I voted for Obama, sent my absentee in to do so. Praying to a fictional god had nothing to do with it. If the majority of selma would educate themselves on everything esle in the world as much as they bible thump the city would be a better place!
I hope this uplifts people, just being able to see a bi-racial man as president tells me that anything is possible, hopefully it tells the youth of selma the same.

Hmmm. It is interesting that the only one that was attacked in this endorsement was Sarah Palin. The STJ "found her lacking in empathy and substance". Who are ya'll listening to?
I guess you had to attack someone so it was Sarah , the real outsider and the real conservative. Where and when did she show no empathy? Lack of substance? Only if you regard "gotcha interviews" that were lacking in substance. I suspect your attack was based on media bias against conservatives.
Regarding the negative comments regarding Obama...you guys (Posters) are not saying anything of interest. Your hate will not change things.
The people spoke. Yes, an overwhelming majority of blacks voted for the first real African-American for president. It was also about the same percentage of blacks that voted for every Democratic nominee since Voting Rights. Where is the surprise?
By the way, since Voting Rights there have been 7 men elected president. Six white men and one black man...that is 14.3%. The US population reflects 13.4% black. Looks to me that it was the law of averages to elect a president of color.
Last word...God is always in control no matter if there is a good leader or a bad leader. I voted for Sarah Palin.
May President Obama have the wisdom needed to guide this country.

Well said. God is always in control, and His Word say "all things work together for the good of them that loves the Lord and are called acording to his purpose". All things, including the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. I pray that after 232 years, the citizens of this country will put God first, country second, and party last.
