George Walker Jr.

George Walker Jr., 64, of Selma, died Friday, September 10, 2004, at his home.

Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 18, at Town Creek Baptist Church in Polk, with the Rev. P.E. Bonner officiating. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy L. Walker; two sons, Herbert and Jerome Walker; one daughter, Catherine Walker; four brothers, Roosevelt, Robert, Johnnie and Frank Walker; four sisters, Helen, Doris, Della and Lena Walker; five grandchildren; one daughter-in-law; three brothers-in-law; nine sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers are cousins and friends.

Honorary pallbearers are cousins and friends.

Mr. Walker was a Baptist, and a member of Town Creek and president of the Usher Board. He worked on numerous jobs. He worked for eight years at the Selma Baptist Hospital, as a security guard.

Elnora Conner Carter

Elnora Conner Carter, 56, of Orrville, died Sunday, September 12, 2004, at a Selma hospital.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 18, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. John L. Ward officiating. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include three loving daughters, Sherry Carter (Robert) Mitchell of Selma, Barbara Carter of Washington, D. C. , and Tracy Carter (Gregory) West of Lithia Spring, Ga.; three granddaughters, Kendra and Veronica Carter of Orrville and Laquilla West of Lithia Spring, Ga.; five sisters; Tanzie (Rev. W. D.) Dickerson, and Rosa L. (Rev. Jerry) Anderson of Centreville, a devoted and loving sister, Mary Conner of Orrville, Shirley Conner of Washington, D.C., and Maggie Conner of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Conner of Washington, D. C. and Bry Lee Conner of Opp. four special nephews: Willie C. Conner, James D. Conner, Johnny Conner and David Conner; two special nieces, Mary Giles and Diana Conner; and a

host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives; A special friend, James Cheese.

She was preceded in death were parents, Haywood and Cherry Conner; five brothers, James Conner, Kamuel Conner, Haywood Conner, Jr., Clarence Conner and Anderson Conner.

Mrs. Elnora Conner Carter, the daughter of the late Mr. Haywood and Cherry Conner was born August 2, 1948 in Dallas County, Orrville, Alabama.

She confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Antioch Baptist Church were she remained a very active, faithful member of the Choir until her death. She had a love for her church and love for people and always a smile on her face.

She was educated in the public school system in Dallas County, Alabama. She was a graduate of Keith High School “Class of 1966.”

Jack Lewis Jr.

Jack Lewis Jr., died Thursday, August 26, 2004, at a hospital in New Haven, Conn.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday September 3, at Mt. Hope Temple UHC in New Haven, Conn., with Bishop JC Wright officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery where his beloved Aunt Alberta Batup is buried with McCahn Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Lewis; two sons Lensey and Gary Lewis; three daughters, Monica Moore, Hyvillia and Samantha Lewis; one daughter-in-law, Becky Lewis; three brothers, James, Jerry and Robert Lewis; three sisters, Ola (Jordan) Rueben, Sarah Jackson and Alberta (Willie James) Howard of Selma; three aunts, Sylvia (James) Hasberry, Florence Davis; and a special aunt, Sarah B. Williams and her children and sons-in-law of New and West Haven, Conn.; three uncles, Elder Morgan Lewis, Richard Fitts and Rev. Willie Fitts of Selma; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; four aunts-in-law; 29 grandchildren; five great-grands; four god-children; 10 great-god children; a host of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; two special nephews, Jessie J. and James; and his special grand-nephew, Jack Lewis IV Jackson; a host of cousins and friends whom he was very fond of.

He was preceded in death by five siblings, Rose, Joe (Broadway), Ethel, Doris C. and Kenneth, and one son Jack III.

Mr. Lewis, was born July 3, 1941, to the late Elder Jack and Ethel Mae Lewis, in Selma. He attended Selma Public Schools and graduated in 1960 from Hill House High School in Connecticut. He attended Stone Wall College for 2 years. In 1962, he join United Slates Air Force as an Air Force Policeman with Top Secret Clearance, stationed at SAC Head Quarter. He received an honorable discharge in 1966.

Afterward he worked at Olin in New Haven. He also ran Jack Sandwich Shop on Winchester Avenue in New Haven. In 1977 he ventures into his own business, Jack Cleaning Service that he operated until his illness.

He retired from Alden Place and begin to supervise his love ones in his home as Captain Jack or Big Jack.

Beatrice Lee Ammons

Beatrice Lee Ammons, 79, of Brandon, Fla., died Friday, September 17, 2004.

Survivors include her son, Rev. John C. Russell of Brandon; three grandchildren; nieces, Marie Johnson, Alcoa, Tenn., Norma Raye Burnett and Margaret Ammons both of Bessemer; and nephew, Michael Padalino of Birmingham.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bell Shoals Baptist Church Building Fund in her memory.

Mrs. Ammons was native of Arkadelphia, she had resided here for 11 years coming from Bessemer.

Johnny Murray Meeks

Johnny Murray Meeks, 66, of Athens, died Sunday, September 19, 2004, at a hospital in Huntsville.

Memorial services are at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 21, at First Baptist Church Chapel in Athens, with the Rev. Joe Teal officiating.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Florence Allene Meeks of Athens; two daughters, Michelle Creel of Athens and Robin Blankenship of Madison; one son, John Mark Meeks; one granddaughter, Wendy Miller; one grandson, Morgan Creel; one great-grandson, Michael Miller; and one sister, Ruby Reynolds of Athens.

Mr. Meeks served 20 years in the United States Air Force, as a loadmaster on 124-141 and CSA Aircraft. He was employed at Decatur General Hospital Plant Operations as an electrician.

Henry Hall Shuler Sr.

Henry Hall “Hank” Shuler Sr., 73, of Minter, died Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at a hospital.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, at the Chapel of Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Francisco officiating. Burial will follow in Braggs Cemetery with Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include three sons, Henry H. Shuler Jr. (Tammy) of Pine Level, Charles David Shuler (Sharon) of Atlanta, Ga., and William Rodgers Shuler (Opal-deceased) of Montgomery; one daughter, Phyllis Shuler Dantzler (Vernon) of Greenville; nine grandchildren, Kelley (Wesley), Gabe (Natalie), Amellia, Samantha, Erin (James),

Robin, Caitlin, Lauren and Eden (James); two great-grandchildren, Erica and Everette.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Bender Shuler.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Dunklin-Herndon Home.

Luvonia P. Hall

Luvonia P. “Mudear” Hall, 86, died Tuesday, September 14, 2004.

Funeral Services are at 12 noon Wednesday, September 22, at Salem Primitive Baptist Church, Orrville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Smith & Gaston Southside directing.

Survivors include her two sons, Matthew Milhouse (Betty) and Andrew L. Milhouse (Darlene) of Decatur, Ga.; two daughters, Minnie Square of Birmingham and Lillie Price (Willie) of Decatur, Ga.; two sisters, Lula Manual of Birmingham and Hattie Craig of Marion Junction; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a devoted best friend, Mrs. Lela Fisher.

Mrs. Hall, was a member of Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Orrville.

Florence Dixon

Florence Dixon, 38, of Selma, died Sunday, September 12, 2004, at a Birmingham hospital.

Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 18, at New Shiloh Baptist Church with Pastor Ralph Edwards officiating. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery with Walker Mortuary directing.

Survivors include her mother, Evang. Cherry Dixon; grandmother, Emma Dixon; one son, Kendall. Dixon; grandsons, Fabian Leshore, Antonio Hale and Kevin Harris; four brothers, Steven Finley, Robert Thomas Jr., Rodney Thomas and Alfred Thomas of Selma; six sisters, Elizabeth Dixon of Selma, Regina (Winston) Barnes of Birmingham, Patricia D. Simmons of Selma, Ceola (Jimmy) Richardson of Orrville, Roxie (Leon) Tate and Sara M. Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; other relatives, Betty J. Cunningham, Cleophus Dixon and Jessica Moultrie.

James Allen Hodgens

AIC James Allen Hodgens, 22, of Whiteman Air Force Base, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, in Warrensburg, Mo.

Services are at 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 21, at Harris Memorial Freewill Baptist Church in Greenville, Tenn.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Military graveside services with Maxwell Air Force Base Honor Guard will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, at Pine Crest Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directing.

Family visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Thursday, at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Heiberger.

Survivors include his parents, Deryl and Sharon Hodgens of Greenville, Tenn., Camp Creek Community; biological mother, Margaret Krein of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandparents, James and Audie Hodgens of Sprott; Charles and Dot Rumfelt of Marion, NC; one brother, Charles Smith of Centreville; three sisters, Alicia Paxton of Marion, Melissa Paxton of Mobile and Margaret (James) Smith of Greenville, Tenn.; special niece and nephew, Elijah and Logan Smith of Greenville, Tenn.; special friend, Cleo Hodgens of Auburn; and many special cousins, aunts and uncles.

Active pallbearers are Joey Linch, Ryan Linch, John Hodgens, Ben Johnson, Matthew Hodgens and Michael Hodgens.

Mr. Green was a graduate of Green County Christian School Class of 2000. He was a member of Harris Memorial Freewill Baptist Church, a member of Camp Creek Ruritan Club and was active for many years in the 4-H Club.

Ernest Green, of Selma, died Friday, September 10, 2004, in Selma.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, September 20, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Beloit, with the Rev. Ernest Wright officiating and Walker Mortuary directing.

Vernell Benjamin Moore, 101, of Ford Heights, Ill, formerly of Selma, died Saturday. September 18, 2004, in Ford Heights, Ill.

Margaret Cleveland, 88, of Selma, died Friday, September 17, 2004, at a local hospital.

Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, at Elmwood Cemetery with Elder F.D. Jackson officiating and Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include three sons, Claude H. Cleveland Sr. (Dorothy) of Birmingham, Junie and Edward Cleveland of Selma; three daughters, Linda Bruno, Marilyn Cleveland and Elizabeth (Willie) Smith all of Selma; two brothers, Robert Stevenson of Lake Charles, La., and Willie Stevenson (Sarah) of Detroit, Mich.;
