As part of the One Hot Summer Series, Riverfront Park will host a fashion show with local trends and threads Saturday.

The Fashion on the River Expo will showcase six local boutiques.

Event coordinator Aisha Smith said that the event will not only serve as entertainment for the community, but it will also highlight the riverfront and downtown Selma.

“The fashion show will be something positive for Selma. It will give us a chance to showcase the riverwalk that hardly any of the natives take notice to. The only time the riverwalk gets attention is when visitors come down,” Smith said.

More than 40 models from Dallas County will participate in the show. Smith says that the models cover all shape and sizes. The models range from ages 5 to 50.

Smith hopes that the variety of models will set the perfect message towards self-confidence as children are getting ready to head back to school.

“Kids that have self-esteem issues can boost their self-confidence right into the new school year by attending the show,” Smith said.

Local artists will perform as the show takes place and there will also be giveaways throughout the intermissions. The Selma Police Department, Belk, and Winn-Dixie are few of the many sponsors who have donated to the event.

“Selma needs to spend more money in Selma. We have awesome stores and hidden jewels, if people knew what all we have, they wouldn’t spend their time traveling to Montgomery and Prattville,” Smith said. “I’m hoping that once we showcase the great boutiques of Selma this weekend, people will come out to shop at them.”

The event will start at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the participating local boutiques; Turning Heads Boutique, Allez-oup, Highland House, Sew N Style, Odds and Things and Peach Perfect Patterns.

Children five years old and younger will be free. A reception with light refreshments will be held after the event and a mixer will take place at the St. James Hotel following the fashion show.
