There’s a misconception in Selma that young people are leaving town in droves, but that couldn’t be more than the truth. Actually, there are dozens upon dozens of young adults having a positive impact in the area we live.

On July 1, our third annual 20-Under-40 magazine will be released. Within its pages are examples of young adults who have either stayed in Selma, moved back to their hometown or found that Selma is the place for them.

Although each of their stories is unique, all 20 have shown that not only are there opportunities in Selma, but there are multiple ways to make a living and to help move our city forward.

Take Jerria Martin for instance. After getting a degree from Princeton University, Martin has returned to Selma and found a way to give back to those who may be looking for guidance. Martin is the director of Circle of Hope Ministries, where she meets with inmates from the Dallas County Jail and discusses The Bible.

Others have returned to their old stomping grounds to make a difference.

Selma High School graduates Aubrey Larkin and Ashlyn Goodwin have returned to the school, where they lead the next generation of Saints. Larkin serves as the school’s principal, while Goodwin is a biology teacher.

This year’s crop of 20-under-40 selections have careers from preaching to networking. Many of them have started families or were raised here. Many went to college, spread the word about Selma and have returned to make an honest living.

These 20 are showing that young people aren’t leaving Selma. Instead they are some of the city’s hardest working people, who are behind the scenes and don’t get a lot of credit.

We’re excited to share their stories with you. Look for this year’s 20-Under-40 edition of Selma the Magazine July 1.
