Pool will open Tuesday morning

The Dinkins Pool is set to have its grand opening Tuesday, after it had to be delayed one day due to some last-minute touch-ups.

The pool was going to open Monday, but Selma City Councilman Michael Johnson called it off because several final tasks still needed to be completed.

Johnson said he wanted to use Monday to install a lifeguard chair, picnic benches and umbrellas.

“I think it was a lot more convenient for everyone to finish up today, and open up tomorrow,” Johnson said. “We’re a day over, but we’re going to definitely plan to have the grand opening tomorrow.”

Children were in the pool swimming Monday when Johnson arrived and he allowed them to stay, but the pool was not officially open.

Johnson represents Ward 8, which includes the location of the Dinkins Pool, which is at the corner of Dexter Avenue and Division Street.

Even with another day to work on the pool, he said everything still won’t be completely finished. He said he wants to install a security system and replace two doors in the rear of the building.

“We want to make sure we protect the stuff that’s inside,” Johnson said. “We don’t want anyone to go in there and steal pumps. It’s been broken into before, and we’re trying to eliminate all of that breaking in.”

In addition, Johnson said he’s working on installing a new fence because the old one is rusting and needs more barbed wire. With all of those plans, he wants to look out for the interest of children who might try to sneak into the pool, which might lead to drowning or other accidents.

“We want that pool to only be operated when we have a lifeguard there,” he said. “You have kids that will try to go out there and try to swim when the pool is not opened.”

Johnson said he hopes the pool will stay updated with proper repairs and is well taken care of.

“As long as they get it done, I’m hoping and praying every year this pool be maintained because it wasn’t like it should be,” Johnson said.
