The team of David Pearce, Will Pearce and Lee Calame won Thursday’s Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament at Valley Grande Golf Course.

The trio shot 54, which is the equivalent to making a birdie on every hole, to best the field by two shots in the three-man scramble.

“It feels good just for picking at everybody,” David Pearce said after accepting his team’s first place prize — three $75 gift cards to Mark’s Mart. “It’s not winning the state championship like my daughter did in tennis, but we get a little bragging rights.”

Although the team of Pearce, Pearce and Calame — sponsored by Trustmark Bank — won the overall prize, it was clear the day’s biggest winner was the chamber of commerce. Sheryl Smedley, executive director for the chamber, said Thursday is the only non-dues revenue that the chamber gets each year.

“We are a business just like anybody else. We’re a membership organization, but it’s a business, so this is the only non-dues event that we have at this time,” Smedley said. “The success of this event is the success of the chamber.”

Smedley said the tournament is unique in that it provides not only golf but also networking opportunities for those who take part.

“It’s a great way to connect and you do meet new faces out here,” Smedley said. “Most of these businesses have offices in other communities outside Selma and Dallas County so they invite those associates to come over and network with the associates here… It’s a win-win situation.”

The 22 teams were broken into three flights and the top three teams in each flight were awarded prizes. Pinebelt Wireless finished second with a 56 in the first flight, followed by Edwards and Wilkinson CPA with a 54.

The second flight was won by Trustmark’s second team with a 60. Smitherman Brothers second team finished as the runner-ups in flight two, followed by Byers Engineering.

The third and final flight was won by Henry Brick, who shot 63 to edge out Mayor George Evans’ team and Wood Orthodontics.

The winners of the closest to the pin challenge were Calame, Ira Wagoner, Paul Garner and Mayor Evans. The longest drive competition was won by Heath Harrelson.

Second place team winners in each flight won three $50 gift cards to the Central Alabama Farmer’s Co-Op and third place winners received a $25 gift card to Rountree. All first place team winners won $75 gift cards to Mark’s Mart.

Except for the advantage hole, each of the closest to the pin and longest drive winners won a Tad Moore wedge or putter among other prizes.
