The Relay For Life Selma and Dallas County has been delayed due to the threat of rain and storms Friday.

Relay will now take place Thursday, May 7 at 4 p.m. The event’s venue, Selma’s Lions Park, 2401 West Dallas Ave., will remain the same.

Relay chairwoman Tina Spidle-Yelverton said given the high chances of rain Friday, the committee felt the right decision was to delay.

She said the new Thursday date might have added benefits too.

“The reason we changed the time was so that people could get to work on Friday morning because this is on a Thursday,” she said. “That was really the only date all the committee members would be available to do their part, and we have to have the entire committee there to pull it off.”

The new date will also give the 36 teams and 200 individuals more time to raise money to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“We think Thursday night is going to be better because people can get off work and come on down here to have fun,” she said. “It’ll be nicer, and it won’t interfere with people’s weekends they have already scheduled because of the last minute change.”
