Events benefiting non-profits all over Selma

The time for giving in the Queen City is just getting started. Thanksgiving and Christmas are known as the giving season, but springtime is a great time in Selma to give back and help non-profit organizations that are trying to raise money for good causes.

The spring giving season started last week with the fourth annual Alabama River Chili Cookoff, which is proof that people can help out non-profit organizations in need and have a good time. The money raised from the cookoff will help benefit SABRA Sanctuary, which provides a safe shelter for victims of domestic violence.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church held its Little Friends Fish Fry Thursday, and the Lion’s Club held it’s first annual Central Alabama Crawfish Festival Saturday to help buy glasses for people with visual disabilities.

Those charitable events were just the beginning though. This week will provide Selma residents with plenty of opportunities to give back and have fun too.

Thursday people will get an opportunity to help out the Old Depot Museum, which houses some of Selma’s historic past inside with the Low Country Boil. The event, which will help the Depot restore and preserve Selma’s history, offers people a chance to enjoy Cajun cuisine. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the museum.

Saturday will host a trio of events that all have good goals in mind. The day will get stated with the Selma Charity League Yard Sale and the Grow Selma BBQ, which will benefit Grow Selma. The group is planning a community garden to teach people how to grow food and eat healthy.

The Michael Johnson Football and Cheer Camp will give children in Selma something fun and life-changing to participate in.

Another big event Saturday is the Butterflies and Bridges Run, which aims to raise money for the Selma High School Athletic Department.

There certainly isn’t a shortage of opportunities to give back or to have fun. We encourage people in the community to get out and attend these events. People won’t just have a good time while attending them. They will also make a difference in the community.
