Two Selma residents were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries early Sunday morning and late Monday night after two separate shootings.

According to Lt. Curtis Muhannad with the Selma Police Department, the first shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Muhannad said officers responded to the 100 block of Washington Street to a call about a female gunshot victim in her twenties.

When officers arrived on scene, the victim had already been transported to the emergency room in a private vehicle.

According to witnesses that were in the area when the shooting happened, several gunmen fired shots in the area where the victim was standing with other people.

Muhannad said detectives with the Selma Police Department Major Crime Unit made contact with the victim at the emergency room, where she was being treated for non life-threatening injuries to her left armpit area.

“Detectives believe that an argument occurred between the victim’s party and the shooters prior to the actual shooting,” Muhannad said. “The Major Crime Unit detectives are currently following up on possible leads to identify the shooters.”

The second shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Monday after what detectives believed to be a shootout on the 1600 block of Martin Luther King Street.

When officers arrived, they were told the 23-year-old male victim was taken to the emergency room, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his lower left back. Muhannad said the injury was non-life threatening.

According to Muhannad, detectives found several shell casings both inside and outside of the house, which led them to believe the people inside returned fire at the outside shooters.

“Detectives have cause to believe that a shootout occurred between unknown suspects from outside of the residence and occupants of the residence,” Muhannad said. “The victim is to assumed to have been shot while inside the residence from a round penetrating the walls.”

According to Muhannad, 15 shell casings were collected at the crime scene by investigators, and the majority of them were from a 9mm weapon.

Muhannad said he was not sure Tuesday if both victims from the shootings have been released from the hospital yet.

The Selma Police Department urges anyone with knowledge of the shootings to call their Crime Stoppers at 874-2588 or 1-866-442-7463.
