U.S. Congresswoman Terri Sewell escorted the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall around the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial during the royal couple’s visit to Washington, D.C. last week.

“Earlier this month, our nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches, and Dr. King was an instrumental part of the ongoing struggle for equal rights,” Sewell said. “The civil rights movement was a defining point in our nation’s history. Dr. King was a visionary whose leadership helped our nation shed its dark past and move towards a brighter future. I am pleased that Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla were able to visit the King memorial during their royal visit.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rep. John Lewis, Harry Johnson Sr. (President and CEO of the Memorial Foundation), and Dr. Ed Jackson Jr. (Executive Architect of the MLK Memorial) also served as royal guides.
