Members of the Youth Leadership Selma-Dallas County were interviewed by TV anchor Sheinelle Jones and will be featured on NBC’s Today Show Saturday morning.

Jones asked the students about their thoughts on the upcoming jubilee to get a teenager’s viewpoint of the Queen City of the Black Belt, the events that have transpired here and what the city’s future looks like.

“They were so passionate. They didn’t laugh and giggle and they were composed,” said leadership interim director Callie Nelson, who got to watch the interviews.

Nelson said that Jones asked all six students the same three questions. She asked if they had seen the movie “Selma” and how it made them feel, what it is like to live in Selma and whether this weekend’s upcoming anniversary has affected that and what they think of Selma’s future.

The students who took part were Mary Stewart Jr. from Morgan Academy, Mary Logan Kelley from Morgan Academy, Rykia Henry at Selma High School, Ivana Angion at Dallas County High School and Paul Alvarado at Selma High School.

Nelson said Jones also interviewed probate judge Kim Ballard and Mayor George Evans during her interviews for the story.

Nelson said after the interview Jones took time to get know the students better.

“I think the kids were so excited and it gave them a great opportunity to speak on behalf of their city and show their pride but also the struggles,” Nelson said. “They were very honest in saying we do have separations in some things.”

The Today Show airs on NBC Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.
