Amber Black received the Congresswoman Terri Sewell Scholarship. Black attended Selma High School. She is now a student at Troy University.

Christopher Brown was awarded the Mrs. Josephine Stratman Stokes Scholarship. Brown graduated from Selma High School and is now enrolled at Alabama A&M University.

“We’re very excited about giving scholarships to students and to have the supporters that we have,” said Charlotte Griffeth, president of The Selma Chapter of the Links, Inc. “We try to give a minimum of $500 per scholarship, and we hope to give more.”

Griffeth said the scholarships stand for more than good grades.

“We look at their academic achievement, but we also look at their community service and things that they are doing to better themselves as a whole person,” Griffeth said. “It’s not just about the grade point average, but it’s also about what they are doing in service to help better themselves and to help others. We just want them to know how proud we are of them. We just want them to know that we salute them in their endeavors.”

The students selected show qualities that Griffeth said are important for young adults to have, and that’s why she is proud to have this group represent the Links.

“I look at their perseverance and their commitment to excellence and it represents the best of not only them, but their respective high schools,” Griffeth said. “So we’re very proud of them, and we’re very proud of the product that the schools are producing here in the area.”
