With Christmas just weeks away, the Salvation Army is asking the public to continue to support the Angel Tree Program.

At least 487 of the 586 “angels” were adopted Tuesday at the charity’s radio blitz, according to Major Mary Welch.

As of Friday morning, there are less than 50 available to be adopted at Walgreens, the Salvation Army’s main office, First Cahawba Bank, Trustmark Bank, the Selma-Dallas County Public Library and Welle Studio, according to Major Steve Welch.

“If they aren’t adopted, then we have to do the best we can to try and take care of those angels, but they are less likely to get what they are wanting,“ Steve said.

Through the Angel Tree Program, Christmas gifts are provided to children from low-income families. The presents usually includes a wish list of needs and wants.

The angel remains anonymous throughout the process.

After the donor has shopped for the presents, he or she then returns them, along with the child’s wish list, to Salvation Army’s main office.

Catesby Jones, president of First Cahawba Bank, said the bank agreed to serve as one of the locations because he felt it was an great way to help out.

“It’s very important for us to give back to the community, and this is one way we can do that through helping the Salvation Army to make sure the kids have a good Christmas,” Jones said.

Steve said he is confident that the community will collect the rest of the remaining angels.

“I believe they are all going to be adopted, since there are not that many left, and we keep getting calls from people who want to adopt an angel,” he said.
