There’s plenty to do in Selma in October

If you can’t find something to do in Selma this month, you probably aren’t looking.

We all hear the gripes from time to time about how there’s not a lot of things to do in Selma, but right now there is enough to keep anyone busy.

The Central Alabama Fair will continue through Saturday, with pageants and fun rides that probably can’t be enjoyed to their fullest in one night.

Yeargan Farms has opened its Pumpkin Patch and although Monday-Thursday is reserved for field trips and groups, Friday-Sunday the patch is open to the public. Yeargan has everything from an inflatable park, a wagon ride, a petting zoo, a hay ride, a maze and much more.

Friday night Selma and Dallas County will host homecoming football games. The Saints will play Brookwood while the Hornets will face off with Central Tuscaloosa.

Next week the fun just continues.

Lobsterfest, a fundraiser that benefits Little Friends School and other community outreach projects is next Thursday, Oct. 9 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. We encourage the community to attend this annual event, enjoy a fresh Maine lobster, and do their part to help a worthy cause.

But it’s not the only fundraiser worth contributing to next week.

The Integrity Worldwide Run for Kenya 5K is also next Saturday, Oct. 11 at Bloch Park.  The Dallas County High School bass fishing tournament will be that same day as well, with the proceeds helping out the school’s parent teacher organization — which will use its funds to help fund classroom and school needs.

Sometimes it’s easy to sit back and complain about having nothing to do, but October in Selma is not that time. There’s plenty to do and plenty to see, so make sure to take advantage of it.
