Editor’s note: This is the next in a series of articles by the Times-Journal featuring each of the valedictorians from high schools in Dallas County.

The numerous responsibilities Ellwood Christian Academy graduate Ebony Simpson took on during her high school career didn’t stop her from completing her ultimate goal to become her class’ valedictorian.

Simpson graduated with a grade point average of 3.68 while active in a college dual enrollment program, sports teams and school organizations. Simpson described the honor as the answer to her prayers.

“I was a busy person and after all that I’ve been through, I still was the top graduate,” Simpson said. “I was shocked, but I was happy, blessed and grateful.”

Simpson participated in the Wallace Community College Selma dual enrollment program, National Honor Society, Belmont Community Development Corporation, drama club and choir. She also served as the team captain of the volleyball, basketball, softball and track team.

“If I stay still, it wouldn’t feel right,” Simpson said. “I like to be in motion all the time.”

Simpson has had her mind set on the valedictorian title since the 10th grade, after hearing her mother tell her that going the extra mile will take her far in life.

“She pushed me and I pushed myself and I made it,” Simpson said.

As a person who cherishes the ability to make her mother proud, Simpson said she felt it would be great gift to tell her mom she graduated at the top of her class.

“It feels great,” Simpson said. “I made a lot proud of people proud.”

Simpson is in the process of completing two years of her education at WCCS as a recipient of a full-tuition scholarship. Next, she will further her education at UAB to earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
