The reasons behind a tragic shooting Sunday are still not known. But what is known is that two Selma men are dead, and another is in a Montgomery hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Sunday, at around 2 p.m., the Selma Police Department responded to a home on the 2400 block of Landline Road, in response to a call of multiple shooting victims.

According to Lt. Curtis Muhannad, with the Selma Police Department, when officers arrived they found two white men fatally wounded from gun shot wounds and another victim “screaming for help in the rear of the residence.”

“Officers cleared the area for the offender and were told that one of the men fatally wounded was the shooter,” Muhannad said.

The police have identified 68-year-old Bernard Steward as the shooter in the murder-suicide investigation. The other fatally injured victim has been identified as Steward’s nephew, James Britton Steward.

“Preliminary investigation has determined Bernard Steward came to the residence of his nephew, where the nephew and his friend were outside under a covered shed area and opened fire on the nephew first and then his friend,” Muhannad said. “The friend was able to flee after being shot.”

Police reported Bernard then went back under the covered shed and shot his nephew several other times and then turned the weapon on himself, committing suicide.

Muhannad said a 9mm handgun was found on the scene.

The 28-year-old victim, who was not identified, was airlifted to a Montgomery hospital for emergency surgery. Monday, authorities reported the victim was in stable condition.
