After police arrived at the scene, a female said she heard several gunshots outside of her residence and saw three-to-four men with guns in their hands.

As the woman looked around the yard, she saw a relative lying on the ground with a gunshot wound, Stewart said.

“A witness stated a subject approached him and the victim and began shooting, striking the victim in the back,” Stewart said.

The victim, Rodney Walters, 48, was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where he died, according to police chief William Riley.

Joseph Walter, the suspect, will make his first appearance in Dallas County District Court, Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 1:30 p.m.
