Current and former city and county officials attended a packed Dallas County Commission meeting on Monday at the Dallas County Courthouse.

The entire Commission was present: Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and Commissioners Curtis Williams, Jan Justice, Vivian Rogers and Connell Towns.

A moment of silence was done for the passing of former Selma City Councilwoman Nancy Sewell, mother of U.S. Terri Sewell.

The Commission approved a proclamation for Yellow Ribbon Day on Friday presented by former Selma City Councilwoman Angela Benjamin, who recognized families who lost members to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Benjamin said those families will be recognized at Saturday night’s Jazz on the Grass. This week is also declared Yellow Ribbon Week.

Prince Chestnut, Representative for House District 67, former Judge Maggie Drake-Peterson and elected officials Tanika Neely (Tax Collector) and Carol Bonner (Tax Accessor) were also in attendance.

Five new items were passed under the new business section:

-Ronald McWilliams was approved to replace Christian Harris on the North Dallas Water Authority Board.

-West Dallas Water Authority Board and Cedric Campbell discussed the improving water conditions for the Bogue Chitto Water Project.

-Cara Stallman announced a $400,000 CDBG COVID Grant for Isolation cells at the Dallas County Jail.

-Dallas County Tax Collector Tammy King’s annual approval for final settlement.

-Nunn discussed the invitation to attend the Sky Cop meeting on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Selma City Council Chambers.

Selma City Council Clay Carmichael sent the invitation for county officials and state officials to attend.

Faya Toure addressed the Commission on improving conditions at the Dallas County Jail and providing reading material to the inmates.  Toure said that the material is refused, but Rogers and Towns planned to work with her.

Travel requests were also approved on Grants for Schools Conference , scheduled for June 22-25 in Orange Beach:  Kimberly Bonner ($344), Henry Ramsey ($352.96),  Lillie Olds (($358.96), Veronica Evans ($352.96) and Debra Robinson (($356.32)

County Engineer Heath Sexton got approval for three requests: Borrow Pit Lease Agreement wjth Three Marys LLC, Purchase a Lowboy Utilizing ACCA Joint Bid and Motor Grader Lease/Purchase Agreement with Trustmark National Bank pending County Attorney’s Review and Approval.

With the Summer Youth Program canceled. Each of the commissioners will get $5,000 each for a Summer Enrichment program.

Nunn praised Chestnut and State Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier for always fighting for what Dallas County needs.
