Meet the new Alabama Corrections Academy graduating class of 2018-03

Thirty-five officers graduated from the Alabama Department of Corrections Academy (ADOC) on Thursday at the Alabama Criminal Justice Academy Training Center in Selma.

Officers sworn in were Brandon Barlow, Brandon Jones, Carsen Stallworth, Joseph Sutton, Jordan Griffith, Wendy Miller, Andrew Coleman, Jon Minihan, Michael Garrison, Terreance France, Kyra Scott, Corey Taylor, Bobby Foye, Kaleb Hall, Michael Hooks, Christian Robinson, Ethan Brand, Tamarowia Dailey, Larry Holloway, Brandon Jones, Cleophert Warren, Anthony Wedgeworth, Travontay Dixon, Demonte Bell, Broderick Cargill, Devaun Jackson, Robert Reese, Dantavius Scott, Malcolm Sumpter, Tyler Norman, Jermaine Smith, James Barnes, Phillip Kimbrough, Jessy Shotts, Tanner Swinney and Derrick Billups.

Alabama Corrections Academy Director Elliott Sanders praised the Class of 2018-03 for their dedication.

“They have worked hard over the last 12 months,” Sanders said. “We talked about setting goals and what it would take to achieve those goals. You don’t stop when you leave the classroom. The foundation has been built and it’s time to start building on that foundation.”

Former New York City Department of Correction Senior Deputy Commissioner Charles Daniels urged the new officers to carry themselves with dignity and make an impact in their profession.

“Integrity will be the mark which you will be known,” Daniels said. “Doing what’s right is not always popular. Doing what’s popular is not always right. It’s time to seize the moment and do something that is exceptional.”

Barlow urged integrity and professionalism in his class president’s address.

“Put the welfare of the state and the ADOC above your own,” Barlow said. “Treat others with dignity and respect. You can build your personal career on things that are honorable.”

Brand received two honors: distinguished graduate and a $5,000 scholarship to Bethel University. Barlowe also received a distinguished graduate honor and recognized as class president. Norman earned the Academic excellence honor, Griffith earned the Director’s Award.
