SELMA — Shoppers in Selma now have a new destination for affordable, high-quality groceries. ALDI, the nation’s fastest-growing grocer, officially opened its doors Thursday, Oct. 16 at 1952 West Dallas Ave., marking the company’s latest expansion in Alabama.

The opening drew a crowd of eager customers, with the first 100 shoppers receiving gift bags filled with ALDI-exclusive products and a chance to win gift cards through the store’s “Golden Ticket” giveaway. The celebration continued throughout the weekend, as visitors entered for a chance to win a $500 ALDI gift card.

“At our new store, shoppers will find that every decision we make, from out product selection to store layout, is to provide out customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices of any national grocer,” Heather Moore, Loxley Division Vice President for ALDI said. “As shoppers look for better ways to stretch their dollar, ALDI is providing Selma with easier access to quality groceries at affordable prices.”

The new Selma location is part of ALDI’s plan to open 800 stores nationwide by the end of 2028. Known for its efficient store model, ALDI emphasizes simplicity and savings, offering a curated selection of essential groceries at prices that average 36% lower than traditional supermarkets.

“Our mission is to provide quality groceries at the lowest prices to consumers across the country,” Moore said. “We understand that Selma is a vibrant and growing community, so we have selected a location we deem the most convenient for the majority of residents. Out goal is to provide a shopping destination that meets that needs of out shoppers in every community.”

Inside the store, shoppers can expect the hallmarks of the ALDI experience: a simple layout, an emphasis on store-brand products and a streamlined approach to operations, including the well-known quarter cart system. Nearly 90% of the products on ALDI shelves are exclusive brands, ranging from organic meats and fresh produce of gluten-free and plant-based options.

“ALDI is an intentionally different grocery store that is built for today,” Moore said. “We always look for opportunities to pass savings on to our customers, from displaying our products in the boxes they arrive in, to our quarter cart system. When visiting ALDI, shoppers can expect a quick, easy shopping experience with great products at the lowest possible prices during every ALDI trip.”

ALDI has built a reputation for community involvement. The company’s commitment to social impact includes partnerships with organizations such as Feeding America, which helps fight food insecurities across Alabama and beyond. In 2024 Alone, ALDI donated 36.9 million meals nationwide to support hunger relief efforts.

“Being a good neighbor means showing up for our shoppers and communities,” Moore said. “We take this role seriously, focusing on the issues that matter most to our communities — from children’s health and wellness to food insecurity, disaster relief, and education.”

The new store will reflect ALDI’s continued commitment to sustainability. The company was the first U.S. grocer to eliminate single-use plastic bags, and it continues to reduce waste, improve packaging and lower greenhouse gas emissions as part of its nationwide environmental goals.

ALDI’s will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering in-store shopping, curbside pickup and grocery delivery.

With its mix of affordability, efficiency and community engagement, ALDI’s arrival in Selma adds a new option for local families looking to save money without sacrificing quality.

“Our shoppers’ loyalty and passion are unmatched,” Moore said. “We could not be more excited to serve the Selma community and continue that momentum now that the store is open for business.”
