Organizers of the event says the cook-off is more than a culinary contest, it’s a celebration of Selma’s culture and community. The event brings together residents, visitors and local businesses in one of the city’s most scenic areas, blending small-town hospitality with plenty of spice.

“The event is a way to bring funds to different programs the Black Belt Benefit group host to bring resources to different people and organizations in the community,” said Clay Carmichael, event organizer.

Each year, teams compete for the title of best chili in Selma, cooking up their signature recipes in hopes of impressing both the judges and the crown. Eventgoers can purchase tasting kits to sample a wide variety of chili styles, from Texas-style recipes to creative twists featuring local ingredients.

“We have 13 teams competing this year, with different style of awards to be handed out,” Carmichael said.

Alongside the cook-off itself, the day will feature live music, family-friendly activities and vendors offering everything from homemade crafts to festival foods. Local businesses along Water Avenue often join in the festivities, opening their doors to the influx of visitors who come to enjoy the event.

Judging for the cook-off follows a set of specific criteria, including flavor, texture, aroma and originality. A panel of local judges will taste each entry before naming winners in multiple categories such as best chili, most spirited and people’s choice.

The event highlights the spirit of giving that defines Selma’s downtown community. Proceeds from the Alabama River Chili Cook-off support the Black Belt Benefit Group, helping to fund projects that benefit residents year-round.

The Water Avenue Historic District, with its riverfront backdrop and architectural charm, provides a fitting setting for the celebration. Organizers hope the event will continue to attract visitors from around the region, boosting tourism and showcasing Selma’s hospitality.

Parking will be available throughout downtown, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy all the festivities. Tickets and tasting kits can be purchased at the event entrance and more information is available by calling 334-410-0582 or visiting the event’s Facebook page.

“Reliable GMC along with other sponsors help make this event possible,” said Carmichael. “We hope to provide a fun day of festivities to locals and visitors.”

As fall temperatures cool the Alabama air, the heat from bubbling chili pots and the warmth of community connection are sure to fill the streets of downtowns Selma once again, proving that nothing brings people together quite like a good bowl of chili.
