A historic run for the Southside-Selma Panthers reached a new milestone this past week, putting together their first-ever 7-0 start in school history with a dominant 66-0 victory over Sumter Central.
With that success, it’s worth diving into the number that have made this team’s path to history possible as they look to chase down a possible region title with two more wins.
A team that started 0-2 last year before reeling off 11 consecutive wins to reach the semifinals of the Class 3A playoffs, the Panthers are on a path toward redemption this season, and it has shown in their dominant play.
So far this season, they’ve scored 22 or more points in every game, while they’ve scored 44 or more in five of seven, 56 or more in four of seven and 66 or more twice.
Meanwhile, the defense has been equally as impressive.
Matching the success of the offense, the defensive side has posted three shutouts this season, while the Panthers have given up 15 or less in every game so far.
That has led to an average of 51.4 points per game scored by the offense, while the defense is giving up 6.7 points per game. Both of those numbers rank inside the top 10 of the state regardless of classification.
Their closest game of the season came against Thomasville in week two with a 22-15 victory, but since then, a 36-14 win over Sumter Central is the closest contest.
The average margin of victory for the Panthers is 44.7 points, showing their separation from opponents throughout the season.
That has led to a top-five ranking in Class 3A, earning the fifth spot in the most recent standings.
Southside will now look to close out their first perfect 10-0 season in school history the next three weeks as they finish off the regular season with a road matchup at Wilcox Central, a home battle with Thorsby for the region title and a home matchup with a solid 4A Bullock County team.
The Panthers have just one 10-win season in school history—last year’s 11-3 effort, meaning this year could be a new milestone should they surpass the 11-win mark in the postseason.
