SELMA – Selma was covered in pink as hundreds gathered at the George P. Evans Reception Hall for the 2025 Pink Out Selma event, a breast cancer awareness fundraiser and celebration of survivorship.
The event, themed “Give Cancer the Boot,” blended fashion, food and heartfelt stories to support the fight against breast cancer in Dallas County.
Running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event drew a diverse crowd of residents, community leaders, and survivors.
Organizers said the turnout exceeded expectations, with many guests arriving early to take part in the brunch, raffles, games and vendor exhibits that filled the hall.
“The event was packed out we had several notable members show up and attend,” said Gwen Walker, organizer of the event.
Pink decorations adorned every corner of the venue, while upbeat music and laughter set the tone for a day of unity and support.
Local vendors sold handcrafted items, beauty products and awareness merchandise, with portions of the proceeds going toward breast cancer advocacy and care initiatives.
One of the highlights of the day was a runway-style fashion showcase featuring breast cancer survivors.
Nominated by ticket holders, each woman received a professional makeover before confidently strutting down the runway to enthusiastic applause.
The fashion segment was a powerful tribute to strength, resilience, and the importance of community support.
The event also featured two guest speakers: Dr. Donitha Jones‑Griffin, a medical professional and advocate for women’s health, and McLinda Gilchrist, a well-known figure in Selma’s health outreach community.
Both shared personal and professional insights into the impact of early detection and ongoing support for those battling breast cancer.
Tickets were priced at $25 for adults and $12.50 for children 12 and under with T-shirts costing $23-$25.
Each adult ticket purchase included the opportunity to nominate up to two breast cancer survivors to receive makeovers and be honored in the fashion show.
Attendees also received gift bags filled with wellness items and educational materials.
Organizer Gwen Walker said this year’s Pink Out was not just a fundraiser—it was a chance for Selma to come together around a common cause.
“Your best prevention is early detection, go to the doctor get screened, stay active,” said Walker.
All proceeds from the event will benefit local awareness campaigns, outreach programs and support services for those undergoing treatment.
Organizers also hope to use part of the funds to offer free screening opportunities in underserved communities in the region.
Held annually during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pink Out Selma is one of the city’s most vibrant community health events.
It builds on other local “pink out” efforts, including themed athletic events at Selma High School and outreach drives held in clinics and churches.
With its mix of celebration and purpose, Saturday’s event left a lasting impression on many in attendance—and reminded Selma that the fight against breast cancer is one best fought together.
