SELMA – Selma residents kicked off the fall season with a healthy vibe at the 12th annual Get Fit Selma Healthfest on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the McRae Learning Center on Woodrow Avenue.
People of all ages participated in health-themed events including a health education and vendor fair, street Olympics for kids, food trucks selling healthy foods and juices, and a pick-up street basketball tournament. Free screenings and consultations were also available to attendees.
Unlike events in previous years, organizers were not able to conduct the annual 5k run, but a crowd of between 100 and 200 people was in attendance according to organizers.
“It went real well Saturday,” said Sadie Moss, director of the McRae Learning Center. “We had a lot of people. Unfortunately, we did not do the 5k but we had free health screenings and food trucks.”
She said the event was presented by McRae Learning Center and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Selma Alumnae Chapter).
Also represented were members of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority (Rho Eta Chapter), the Rural Health Medical Program and UAB Selma Family Medicine. Health services were also provided by the Birmingham Veterans Outreach Mobile Unit, Dr. Walid Freij and Neurology Consultants of Central Alabama, P.C., and Vaughan Regional Medical Center.
In all, approximately 20 local and state organizations participated in the health education and vendor fair to promote wellness.
