Southside moves up to No. 6 in Class 3A standings

The Southside-Selma Panthers moved up two spots in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association’s weekly high school football rankings thanks to continued success.
Coming off a dominant 56-12 victory over the Keith Bears, Southside reached their highest ranking of the season by earning the No. 6 spot after spending most of the season at No. 8 or No. 9 in the standings.
Mars Hill Bible remains at the top of the standings, receiving 17 first-place votes, while Piedmont, Gordo, Fyffe and T.R. Miller closed out the top five.
Southside sits just one spot outside the top five in the classification now and remains one of five unbeaten teams in the classification, joining Mars Hill, Piedmont, Gordo and Cottage Hill.
Through the midway point of the season, the Panthers have been as dominant as any team in the classification, beating their opponents by a combined score of 258-33 with an average margin of victory of 45 points per game.
That has led to a blazing 5-0 start to the season that has them averaging 51.6 points per game on offense, while the defense is giving up an outstanding 6.6 points per game.
While the offense has shown its flash with 44 or more in all but one game and 56 or more in the last three straight, the defense has given up 15 or less in every game, six or less in three of five and has posted two shutouts.
Southside is currently tied atop the region standings at 3-0 with Thorsby. With matchups against Hale County, Sumter Central, Wilcox Central and Thorsby over the next four weeks, the region championship will be determined in that stretch.
The Panthers not only hope for a region title run, but are also hopeful of earning redemption after falling in the semifinals of last year’s Class 3A playoffs.
