SELMA –The Levitt AMP Selma Music Series turned up the groove this past weekend with the Bridge City Jazz Fest, a free community concert featuring Atlanta’s boundary-pushing TRAP JAZZ and regional favorite Jonathan Michael & Band at the Selma Riverfront Amphitheater.
Gates opened on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. Lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers adorned the area and the show was free and open to all ages.
Blending the soulful sophistication of jazz with the bounce and swagger of Atlanta’s trap sound, TRAP JAZZ was created by pianist and musical director Chris Moten and spotlighted in the 2023 Hulu documentary TRAP JAZZ, which follows Moten alongside drummer Devon “Stixx” Taylor and producer Cassius Jay as they forge a bold, celebratory fusion that’s electrifying live audiences nationwide.
Opening the night, Jonathan Michael brought a high-energy mix of soulful hip-hop with jazz/funk undertones, backed by a tight band and horn-forward arrangements that felt right at home on the river. His recent project, The Discovery, showcased his message-driven performance style and musicianship that’s earned him a growing following across Central Alabama.
“Bridge City Jazz Fest is exactly what Levitt AMP is about, world-class music, free for everyone, in the heart of our city,” Concert Coordinator Lydia Chatmon said. “Bring your people and make a night of it. Everyone is invited to share in the experience, family, friends, and neighbors. Let’s fill the Riverfront with rhythm and joy.”
The Levitt AMP Selma Music Series transformed Riverfront Amphitheater and Park into a gathering place for live music, food and fellowship—building community and economic activity along the Alabama River. The two remaining concerts in October will feature Toia Jones, The Seratones, Mike Clark, Jr., and FPJ. Thanks to sponsor Tristatz, concertgoers also have the chance to win real vacation packages through the end of the concert series.
Food trucks and local vendors will be on site, with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the show under the stars. Series information and the Riverfront Amphitheater location—near 3 Lawrence Street—can be found via the Black Belt Community Foundation and local news listings.
Founded by pianist/MD Chris Moten, TRAP JAZZ merges contemporary trap textures with improvisational jazz musicianship. The group’s story and sound are featured in TRAP JAZZ (Hulu), highlighting collaborators including Devon “Stixx” Taylor and Cassius Jay—artists with credits alongside some of music’s biggest names.
Jonathan Michael (a.k.a. Jonathan Michael Avant) is a trumpeter, vocalist, and hip-hop artist whose performances blend groove-rich bands with uplifting, community-minded storytelling. His album The Discovery channels soulful hip-hop with a jazz/funk heartbeat.
