The Selma City School Board will revisit a potential raise for Chief Schools Financial Officer Grindal Harris at its next meeting after the school board wanted more information from Board President Johnny Moss.

Board Member Brenda Obumanu questioned the size of the raise proposed for Harris, who has held the position since 2010. The CSFO salary is currently at $109,000, but the new contract proposed raising the salary to $125,000.

“I don’t have a problem with giving someone a raise, but I don’t know that we’ve ever given any employee that much of a raise,” Obumanu said during Thursday’s regular meeting. “I don’t have anything against her, but that’s a big raise of almost $20,000.”

Moss said the increase that was proposed is due to the amount of what CSFOs make in comparable districts of Selma’s size.

Harris also said she has not received a “step raise” in the past five years, but that she has been with the district for 15 years.

“I have been here 15 years with this one  district,” Harris said. “If you go look into districts, they have not had a CSFO who has served with them for 15 years.”

Obumanu said this was the time for negotiation, and Harris responded by asking what number she was proposing. No counter offer was mentioned during the meeting.

However, Moss said he would bring back the information he had about the other CSFOs at the next meeting.

No action was taken on this, and Moss said he would have that information available for the board at their next meeting.
