The following are events in the community calendar for June 18. To have your event published in the community calendar, email the details to news@selmatimesjournal.com or drop off a flier for your event in the box at the front desk at the Selma Times-Journal office at 1018 Water Avenue, Suite E.

June 18

  • Painting with Sarah Wagoner will be Wednesday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library. Make your own masterpiece under the guidance of Sarah Wagoner. Cost is $20. Reservations are required, and space is limited. To make a reservation, call 334-874-1725.

June 19

  • The Dallas County Courthouse, Annex and Administrative buildings will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. We will resume normal business hours on Friday, June 20.
  • A Juneteenth Community Gathering will be held at Elyton Baptist Church in Plantersville from 6-8 p.m. There will be free food, story sharing and political education. They will also have a time for communal healing, reflections on the recent storms and building a future that protects rural communities. It is open to all Plantersville residents. It is organized by Hometown Organizing Project.
  • Foot Soldiers Park will have its Juneteenth Celebration on June 19 from 2-6 p.m. at the future home of Foot Soldiers Park at 1705 Selma Ave. Vendor registration is now open at bit.ly/FSPVendor2025. The first four Black-owned food trucks to sign up get 25 prepaid meals! Nonprofits and community resources can also apply for a free resource table. Entertainment includes Sahi On Ko Djony, Logan the Entertainer and the Clutch Band. Barbara Barge will be the honored foot soldier.

June 21

  • The Levitt Amp Selma Music Series begins on Saturday, June 21, with Reggae on the River at Riverfront Amphitheater, 2 Green Street.  Gates open at 7 p.m. and showtime is at 8 p.m. Free entry. Vendors and food trucks available. Bring your Lawn Chairs, Tents and Coolers (Clear Bags Only).

June 22

  • Elbethel Missionary Baptist Church, 2792 Persimmon Tree Road in Valley Grande, will have its usher board anniversary on Sunday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m. The theme is based on Proverbs 8:34. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Saul Jackson of Little Rock Baptist Church of Brent. Master of ceremony will be Deacon Henry Hicks Sr. The Rev. Trenton Pressley is the pastor.
  • New Bridge Missionary Baptist Church will be celebrating their 138th Church Anniversary on Sunday, June 22, at 1 p.m. The church is located at 1701 County Road 134 in Sardis. The Rev. Thomas Patterson of the Brein Community Church will be the guest speaker. Elder F.D. Jackson is the pastor. Deacon James Jackson is the chairman.

June 23

  • Seeds of Hope Summer Sports Spectacular will be June 23-25. Drop off will be at 9 a.m. Pick up will be at noon. The camp is located at Seeds of Hope (103 Maxey Street). Athletes will learn skills in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, tennis, volleyball, track and basketball. Call Coach Nez Vaval at 786-202-4925 with questions.
  • FBC Selma will have its vacation Bible school June 23-25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Children ages 4 to completing sixth grade are invited. To register, log on to https://vbspro.events/p/events/vbsatfbcselma/sessions/93870/participants/new.

June 24

  • Make a one-of-a-kind decoupage plate with Jan Parker on Tuesday, June 24, from 2-4 p.m. at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library. Cost is $15. Reservations are required, and space is limited. To make a reservation, call 334-874-1725.

June 27

  • Selma Soul BJJ will have its promotion ceremony and community celebration on Friday, June 27, at 6 p.m. It is located at the Selma Mall at 1391 E. Highland Ave, Suite 4.

June 28

  • The Institute for Common Power is sponsoring its Freedom School on Saturday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1018 Water Avenue. Breakfast and lunch will be served. For more information, visit instituteforcommonpower.org.

June 30
