James Perkins Jr. has formally announced that he is running for re-election as Mayor of Selma.

On Monday, Perkins held a campaign rally on the steps of city hall to announce his bid one day prior to the beginning of qualifying.

“Selma, we’ve come a long way—and together, we are not done yet,” Perkins in a press release. “Over the last four years, we’ve faced disaster after disaster, but through faith, persistence, and  unity, we’ve made real progress. Now, I’m ready to finish what we started—moving Selma forward the  right way.”

Perkins said his leadership guided the city “during unprecedented challenges” including the  COVID-19 pandemic, Hurricane Zeta, the 2022 arctic freeze and theEF-2 tornado of January 2023. He said the administration’s work to restore infrastructure, secure federal and state  recovery aid, improve public safety, and stabilize city finances—all while maintaining transparency and  accountability.

In his address, Perkins outlined priorities for another term. That includes, according to a press release:

• Advancing economic development and job creation.
• Strengthening public services and infrastructure.
• Expanding affordable housing opportunities.
• Investing in youth programs and workforce development.
• Promoting unity, equity and integrity in local government.

Perkins was first  elected in 2000 as the city’s first African-American mayor. He was elected again in 2020.

The 2025 Municipal Election is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26. Voters are encouraged to stay  connected with the campaign through events, social media, and outreach opportunities.
