Vaughan Regional Medical Center published Tuesday its community benefit and economic impact report for the 2024 calendar year.

The total impact on the community was estimated at $13,975,400 for the last calendar year. The report also shares data points detailing how the hospital contributes to the Selma and the Dallas County area while supporting the health and well-being of those who live and work in the region.

“We cherish being Selma’s hospital and having the privilege to care for those who call the area home, many of whom are friends, family, or neighbors,” said Michael James, CEO of Vaughan Regional. “Our greatest contribution to this community will always be the care we provide, but it’s nice to share the significant, positive impact we have even beyond our hospital walls as a large employer, taxpayer, and charitable contributor. Your support makes it all possible, and as this report indicates, we did pretty well together in 2024.”

Vaughan Regional’s 2024 community benefit report shows insights into the hospital’s ongoing efforts to meet the area’s growing healthcare needs by welcoming new providers, expanding service lines and continually investing in its facilities and healthcare technology. The hospital added eight affiliated providers and made more than $1.2 million in capital improvements that included an endoscopy upgrade and Orthopedic surgery equipment.

Additionally, VRMC provided $5.4 million in charitable or uncompensated health services to those in need, demonstrating its continued commitment to ensuring everyone has access to care, regardless of their ability to pay.

Vaughan Regional Medical Center is also devoted to creating environments where providers want to practice and employees want to work. In 2024, the hospital distributed approximately $25 million in salaries, wages, and benefits for its 600 employees, and contributed more than $95,000 in professional development and tuition assistance so its team members have the opportunity to learn and improve the care they provide their patients.

The report shares several examples of how Vaughan Regional is continually seeking ways to make a positive impact in the communities it serves, extending far beyond the physical walls of its facilities. Last year, for instance, the organization paid more than $5.5 million in provider, payroll, property, and sales taxes, displaying its commitment to fiscal responsibility in an effort to boost the area’s economic well-being.

The hospital is also honored to have supported local activities and organizations that contribute to the community, including Alabama Hospital Association, Alabama Wildlife Foundation, Blackbelt Benefit Group, Boy Scouts of America, Central Alabama Child Advocacy, Distinguished Young Women, Evans Foundation, Local High School Sports Program, Selma Charity League, Selma/Dallas County Chamber and Selma Rotary, among others.

“These are among the many area organizations that share a similar purpose of lifting our community and its residents,” added James. “We certainly value the support we get from the area, so it’s only natural for us to extend our support to others focused on the health and well-being of Selma.”
