With the end of graduation season, summer is underway.
First of all, I want to let you know that our salute to area graduates will be coming out in our weekend edition on May 31-June 1.
We are taking time to honor all of the graduates by running their photos in this full-color section. We hope that you will enjoy the section.
The summer a great season to be in Selma. Sure the weather is always going to be hot, but there is plenty to do.
We start off this weekend as there will be a May Day Celebration at the E.M. Brown Community Center beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. There will also be a Mental Health Summit at the YMCA.
Speaking of the YMCA, they along with the Edmundite Missions will be having plenty of summer activities going on. This is a great way for kids to pass the time during the summer.
Next week, some area churches are having their vacation Bible schools starting up. Two most notably are at Elkdale Baptist and Cornerstone Presbyterian. If you want your VBS listed in our community calendar, please send me an email.
Also during June, the Selma-Dallas County Public Library kicks off its summer series. They have one for adults and children. The children’s events begin June 9. The adult events begin on June 2.
The annual Rockin’ Rib-Off is on Saturday, June 7. In addition to this being a barbecue competition, it will also serve as the site for the Rick Carter Songwriter Festival. It’s going to be a fund day of music and food in downtown Selma.
Also, don’t forget about Old Cahawba. They have a bring your own bike tour on June 7. But if you can’t come on this day, you can always take a day trip to learn about the historical grounds.
A great place for kids will be the Selma Splash Pad. It opens officially on June 10.
The Selma Dallas County Historic Preservation Society will have its Selma Art Camp 2025 in June and July as well.
Then on Saturdays throughout the Summer, the Levitt Amp Series will be held at the Selma Amphitheater. One of the events is the annual fireworks show. Each concert has a different theme.
I know there is a lot more going on, but there isn’t room to talk about it. I just hope you will take the time and enjoy some of what our community has to offer.
