The Southside Panther football team hasn’t missed a beat since making it to the Class 3A semifinals last year.
That momentum continued into spring practice and into their spring game at Midfield on May 15.
Coach Charles Moody, who is back for his second season with the Panthers, said they were up big on Midfield before the scoreboard was turned off during their game.
“We had a lot of great effort from everybody,” Moody said. “We had a lot of different guys score touchdowns. It was a good night for us.”
In particular, quarterback Trey Davis shined as he spread the ball around to different receivers throughout the jamboree.
Cedrick Simmons and Derrick Surles both had big nights receiving, scoring multiple touchdowns and having a lot of yards after the catch. Both also had interceptions on defense. Other outstanding performances included Amari Townes, James Grisham and KJ Wilson.
“We had a lot of good performances on defense spread across the entire lineup,” Moody said. “They all did a great job.”
Moody said they achieved 100% of their goals for the spring. One of the main goals is to continue building the culture that they laid the foundation for last year. Everyone got stronger and continued to build the culture around the program.
Southside will have three weeks of organized team activities during the month of June. That will include some camps and seven-on-sevens. The Panthers will host one event on June 26, and they will travel to others around the area and state to get better.
One thing that Moody is proud of is seeing his players get attention this spring. He said coaches from Purdue, Auburn, South Alabama, Troy, UAB, West Alabama, Tuskegee, Alabama State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee State University came to visit the Southside Panther football program, among others.
His goal is to get his players exposure so that they can have an opportunity to get to the next level.
‘That’s what it’s all about,” Moody said. “I can’t promise them that they will get a scholarship, but they will get seen by coaches. It’s up to them to make it happen. We’ll get them the exposure.”
