Last month, the Selma Art Guild featured Selma artist Susan Youngblood of SKY Pottery as its artist of the month.

Youngblood has been a part of the art community for the last two and a half years with a consistent focus in developing art through pottery, which has now led to her being SAG’s artist of the month for May as well.

Because of her dedicated efforts, the Selma Art Guild hosted an opening reception for Youngblood on Sunday, April 27, where residents could meet and greet her and see her latest art pieces for sale.

“I’m just thrilled beyond measure,” Youngblood said, “to be able to have an avocation that allowed me to be involved in the arts and be taken seriously as an artist. I am really proud of my art that was featured at this year’s Alabama Artists Roots and Wings show as well.”

Youngblood said featured in the show, she had a Synod, which represents an advisory group for the Pope and a multi-disciplinary group that involves the hierarchy of the different disciplines.

At the Selma Art Guild, Youngblood said she currently has a conclave of cardinals and is actively working on an art figure that resembles the pope.

“That Sunday afternoon [of the reception], it was absolutely wonderful,” Youngblood said. “I just could not believe it. I was so afraid that no one would show up. You know, when you are nine years old, and you have a birthday party, you are afraid nobody will come. But, then people do come and they show up. And [Sunday,] they did come and they did show up.”

Youngblood said she was “in awe” of the reception being that her daughter-in-law brought her grandchildren and said that seeing them was another surprise in itself.

“I was very surprised about that,” Youngblood said. “And, when people came, they actually bought things and I even had some people order some things.”

At the reception, Youngblood said she unveiled a bridal line that included deviled egg plates, little appetizer plates and snack plates, all made out of pottery that people could put food on among many other handcrafted dishes and items that she had for sale. Including little angels that were also handmade as well.

Youngblood said residents interested in her pottery art that is for sale can visit the Selma Art Guild Gallery at 508 Selma Ave. on Saturdays throughout the month of May from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
