Earlier this week, I wrote a column about holidays during the month of May, and one of our readers noticed that I neglected to mention Mother’s Day. That’s because I was planning to write about Mother’s Day today.
I do not want you to think that I have forgotten Mother’s Day. I am headed to see my mother this weekend up in the Birmingham area. I am blessed to still have my mom at the age of 76. I know many of you had to say goodbye to your mother many years ago. Some lost their moms as children. Some as young adults, but I feel very lucky that I have had spent nearly 45 years of my life knowing my mom.
She’s taught me so much over the years. Things like how to love each other even through the bad times. She’s also taught me that actions speak louder than words. She’s also taught me a lot about cooking.
She’s also told me that I needed to find out my convictions for myself because you have to know what you believe. What might be right for someone else might not be right for you. And other things that might not be right for others are right for you. It’s difficult to work through those convictions.
This is wasn’t an example of any of our discussions, but it might give you some insight into what I’m talking about. When it comes to temperance of drinking and alcohol, some might be OK with being able to drink alcohol in moderation while others know that they can’t do it because they would do it in excess.
Maybe some teachers are called to be public school teachers while others believe it’s better to be at a private school. Some may decide to work long hours at a job that doesn’t pay as well, but it’s more rewarding to have an impact on the community.
And she was there to care for my as I recovered from my wreck a few years ago. I am forever indebted to her being there for me many times over the years. I know I have not always done everything she agrees with, but they have accepted me for who I am.
Thank you, Mom! I love you!
