Miles Hannah was on his way to having a big year for the Keith High School Bears.
He had just come off a 30-point game at Dallas County and was on track to break 1,000 career points.
However, he had to deal with some adversity. Keith boys basketball coach Marcus Turner said Hannah, who had just recovered from a head injury over the summer, suffered a ligament tear in his ankle six games into the 2024-2025 season.
For many athletes, the season might have been over, but Hannah fought through it and returned in January during area play. His performance allowed the Bears to win a regular season area championship including a big win over R.C. Hatch at home.
The Bears would go on to advance to the Elite Eight before falling to eventual Class 1A champion R.C. Hatch.
Hannah still broke the 1,000-career-point milestone despite missing nearly two months of the season. That hard work and effort paid off as he signed with Spring Hill College in Mobile.
Hannah has received a number of accolades during his career. He was named first team All-State in Class 1A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He was also a North-South All-Star Game participant. He was also named to the all-tournament team in the Class 1A regional tournament this season.
The 6-1 senior was recruited as a guard, and Turner said he has all the tools not only to be a great athlete, but also as a student.
“What Spring Hill is getting is a hard worker,” Turner said. “They’re getting an excellent student-athlete. He has a 4.0 (grade point average), and he’s a dual-enrollment student at Wallace Community College Selma. He’s a great teammate. He’s a scorer. He’s been a huge part of the success that we’ve had over the past three years. I know we are going to miss him next year.”
This is the second year in a row that Keith has had a player sign a scholarship. Last year, Tommy Tisdale III signed with Brewton Parker College, where he was named freshman of the year this year. They’ve a couple others sign during Turner’s tenure.
“Like I said before, we’re a basketball school,” Turner said. “Getting to regionals isn’t enough for us. Our goal is to win state championships and also prepare guys for the next level.
“What I think this shows the younger guys in the program is that they can’t just show up. They have to put in the effort and the work every time they come to practice. If you put in the work, then you’ll be rewarded.”
