An Editorial Opinion of The Selma Times-Journal

It’s amazing how much a community can look better with a little bit of fresh paint.

That is true of the new mural paintings that have been popping up around the city. The latest came to life on Sunday out at the East Selma Pond. The building housing the restrooms had a blank slate for the latest mural that was designed by Tres and Helene Taylor. This is the 12th and final installment in this particular project which was sponsored by Can’dAid. Four of the 12 murals that were painted in the Black Belt are right here in Selma.

The one that was painted on Sunday was called the Sharing Table. It is a part of the Revolution of Joy series that connects the 12 murals together.

In addition to those murals, they also painted “Windows of Hope.” They were painted on a canvas that will be used to place over boarded up windows in the community.

The beauty of this is that not only will these murals help create beauty and positive vibes in our city, it was also a project that members of the community came together to participate in. People from all walks of life. They all came together unified with one goal in the project, and that was to make Selma a brighter place.

We applaud the work of Tres and Helene Taylor for organizing this project. We also thank the sponsors including Tre’s works on tarpaper, Blackbelt Benefit Group, Making Art Connections Across Selma, The March Quilts, Selma City Schools, Selma Center for Nonviolence Truth and Reconciliation, ArtsRevive, UAB’s Live HealthSmart Alabama, Alabama Community Engagement Alliance. And thank you to the volunteers.

Nothing is too small that it doesn’t make a difference in our community.
