Lady Senators earn spot in state tournament

The Morgan Lady Senators finished in fourth place in the Class AA, Region 2 tournament.
The will advance to the state tournament on May 1 at Lagoon Park.
Morgan defeated to Monroe Academy 10-9 to clinch a state tournament berth on the road on Tuesday.
After allowing two runs in the first inning, Morgan responded with Lydia Cornell taking home and then a three-run home run by Miles Avery Bond in the top of the third inning. Morgan led 4-2.
Addison Bond then hit a single to score Leila Moore in the fourth inning.
The fifth inning was the big inning for Morgan. Hadley Verhoff had a bunt single to score Anna Logan Lee. Moore bunt singled to score Kenzie Oates. Verhoff also scored on an errant throw.
Addison Bond then tripled to score Moore. Lydia Smitherman capped off the rally with a single to score Addison Bond.
After the dust had settled, Morgan led 10-2
Monroe responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 10-9. Addison Bond closed out the game for the win in the circle. She had six strikeouts while allowing five unearned runs on four hits and five walks.
EG Mims started and got three strikeouts in three and one-third innings. She allowed four runs on five hits and no walks.
Smitherman was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Addison Bond had three hits while Moore and Miles Avery Bond had two hits each.
Double elimination play
Morgan fell in the winners bracket to Edgewood 6-2 on Thursday. Smitherman had two of the team’s three hits including a double. Addison Bond had the only other hit. EG Mims had five strikeouts despite allowing six runs, only three were earned, on eight hits and no walks.
Clarke Prep then defeated Morgan 8-0 in the third place game 8-0. Addison Bond had the only hit for the Senators. She also pitched the game allowing eight runs on nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
