Students from all over Dallas County got a chance to glam up for the George Evans Fun Day on Thursday.
The special needs students from all local school districts including Selma and Dallas County have a chance to walk down the red carpet and show off their fits. Many of the boys wore suits and tuxedos while girls showed off their gowns and dresses.
And they all completed their outfits with sneakers for the sneaker ball.
This was the second year that the event was held since former Selma Mayor George Evans passed away. While he may not have been there in person, his impact was still felt today.
His widow, Jeannie, said it was sad not getting to put on the event with her late husband, but she is happy that the fun day still lives on.
“I am thankful for all of the schools who were able to bring the students out here today,” Jeannie said. “George always loved special needs students, and it is great getting to see all of the students come out here and have fun.”
The event attracted a number of local celebrities and public officials including Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, Mayor James Perkins Jr. Council President Billy Young, Councilwoman Christie Thomas, Selma City School Superintendent David Scott, Angela Benjamin and others.
The event also included cheerleading performances from Selma High School, Dallas County High School, Keith Middle and High School, R.B. Hudson Middle School and Southside High School.
Young even led a cheer of his own while welcoming the crowd.
“This is a wonderful way to remember our beloved Mayor George Evans,” Young said. “I know he is smiling in heaven to see all that’s happened. I want you to finish strong.”
Scott said he is grateful to be in Selma, and he believes that the community is stronger together.
“As we continue to work together, I want you to know that we have one vision, one voice, one Selma,” Scott said. “I look forward to being able to serve with you.”
Jeannie was joined by her sons Patrick, Duane and Byron for the event. It was funded through the support of sponsors and teams who participated in the George Evans Memorial Golf Tournament that is held each year at Valley Grande Country Club.
In addition to sponsoring the fun day, they also give $5,000 donations to Selma City Schools, Dallas County Schools and Cahaba Mental Health Center.
