On April 4, The University of Alabama had its annual “Tapping on the Mound” ceremony, which led to several UA students being awarded the Cleophus Thomas Award including a student who was from Selma.
Madison Scott of Selma was presented the award among several others by the Black Faculty and Staff Association for being a graduating senior of the university with the highest academic standing.
The ceremony as well as the award given to the scholars honored the legacy of Cleo Thomas, who was the university’s first Black SGA president.
“The mission of the Black Faculty and Staff Association is to contribute to the betterment of UA by serving as an advocate for educational equity, with an emphasis on African-American students, and the professional needs of its members. To that end, this organization promotes and provides opportunities for networking among individuals and groups to articulate mutual concerns and advance educational opportunities,” according to an April 18 press release from UA.
