On Tuesday, members of the Selma City Council including Council President Warren Billy Young acknowledged a student from the Saints Virtual Academy as the council’s Student of the Month.

SVA’s student Saniya Wilson stood alongside her teacher, Ms. Constance Bowie, in front of the congregation at the city’s routine meeting with smiles in honor of the celebratory event.

“We are ready to formally recognize and commend Saniya Wilson, an outstanding SVA 12th grade scholar who exemplifies academic excellence and perseverance. Saniya is the daughter of Lashonda Wilson and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her education by maintaining straight A’s all-year round,” Young said.

Young told the council and attending members within the city, that despite the unique challenges of virtual learning, Wilson consistently met her academic goals with determination and enthusiasm.

“Her positive attitude is evident every time she visits our campus for assessments,” Bowie said in a statement that Young read to the crowd.

Now, Wilson has recently participated in the Renee Kelly Wilkerson Memorial Scholarship Day where she was awarded a scholarship from the Rotary Club.

“This achievement is a testament to her hard work, dedication and a bright future ahead of her,” Young said to the crowd.

Ms. Thornton, who Young said was his teacher when he was in school, also elaborated on Wilson saying that she places priority on her academic pursuits as evidence through the quality of work she submits.

Ms. Thornton said Wilson’s work is well thought out and timely, and feels Wilson is an outstanding student, who said she is grateful to have in her class.
