The Selma girls track team took home the first place trophy during the King of the West meet at Central-Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
Ciara Perkins led the way in the field events, taking first place in the javelin, beating the closest opponent by more than five feet, and taking second in the shot put.
The 4×400-meter relay team of Selma consisting of Perkins, Keyshaye Savage, Zeria Bell and Talayla Wright took home first place to lead the track events.
Savage also took home a first place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:55.93 and first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a times of 55.87. She also came in second in the 400 meters.
Wright had a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles and third place in both the 400 meters and 300-meter hurdles.
As a team, the Selma girls finished with 88 points, edging Northridge with 85.
“We’re still very young as a team, but I am pleased with our efforts at the meet,” said Selma coach Jeffery Walker. “They girls had a great meet. Our goal is just to get better each week and prepare for sectionals later this month.”
Walker also praised his boys team, which had several personal records set this weekend. That included PRs by Marcus Robinson. Cristian Reese, Anterrius Armstead and Corjae Blevins.
Next up for the team is the Catch Me If You Can track meet at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday. Then they will have two other meets this week.
“We are so excited to have this meet at home this week,” Walker said. “I am excited. The athletes are excited. It means so much to us to get this opportunity.”
