Selma teen wins state all-around

A student from R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy is one of the top gymnasts in Alabama.

Shekinah Andrews, 14, scored the first place All Around Champion for her age group in the state of Alabama.

She has been working hard with the Prattville Gymnastics Team, traveling from Selma to Prattville to practice three times a week. On March 21, she competed in the state meet at Montevallo and scored first place All Around Champion for her age group. She scored a combined 37.225, beating the closest competitor by one-tenth of a point.

She placed first in the vault with a 9.075. She took second place in bars with a 9.450 and floor exercise with a 9.350. She also tied for third place in the balance beam with a 9.350. She was the only competitor in her classification to receive at least a 9.0 score in all four events.

By winning the all-around, she has also qualified to compete at regionals in May. She was named to the State Gymnastic Team and the Gymnastics All-Star Team.

On the State Team she will represent the state of Alabama to compete against the top eight gymnasts in each state. On the All-Star team she will compete in regionals against other girls in her age group.
