It’s been almost a week since the tragedy in the Summerfield community took place that left one elderly resident deceased and many others severely wounded.

Last Friday, 42-year-old Lorenzo Edwards was officially arrested and charged with the violent rampage that started in Summerfield and continued to Alabama 219. It stemmed from Edwards being upset with his significant other and feelings of the world being against him.

Edwards was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. The Selma Police Department charged Edwards with domestic violence and assault. He is being held in jail on no bond.

On Monday, Sheriff Granthum said multiple victims are still in the hospital from the severity of the incident, fighting for their lives.

“They’re stable,” Granthum said. “But, we don’t know the full condition of the victims yet. Hopefully, we can expect a full recovery, but right now, the son is in the worst condition. The mother is currently going through surgeries with her face and stuff, and I’m not sure if she knows about the condition of her son, which makes it sad.”

Granthum said the array of events started Wednesday around 7 p.m. when Edwards was at his home in Summerfield when he allegedly pulled out a firearm, and his 15-year-old son was shot in the head.

Soon after, Granthum said his deputies and his Chief Deputy John Hatfield were dispatched to the area regarding a call about a male chasing a guy, shooting him and shooting guns within that same location.

“So when we got there, Hatfield noticed an elderly white female in the grass bleeding profusely but when he looked up. He saw Mr. Edwards holding two guns in his hands, so he ordered him to the ground, and that’s when he dropped the guns,” Granthum said.

During the investigation of the matter, Granthum also said they learned from Edwards of him shooting another male in the head, but only this time wounding him.

“He didn’t kill him, and since he didn’t kill him, he started chasing him down with the car and ran him over and the male’s wife or girlfriend that was with him, he also tried to shoot her, but his gun jammed,” Granthum said. “So, he took out a pistol and started beating her in the back of the head with it.”

Granthum told STJ that there was a neighbor close by that was able to get the victim into her home, and the next victim that Edwards allegedly sought after was an elderly lady who was across the street.

“She was on the phone and he assumed, in which he stated in the interview, that she was calling out to get help, which she was and then he shoots and kills her, taking an engine block out the back of his car and he just starts bashing her in the head and stuff with it,” Granthum said.

Granthum said if Edwards wouldn’t have been caught when he did, the tragic events would have continued.
