Monday night, The Valley Grande city council discussed several items within the meeting’s agenda including the latest update regarding the city’s simple sales tax.
Mayor Wayne Labbe told the council regarding the city’s simple sales tax, that it is a tax that they have been getting for years based off of the area’s zip code when residents buy things online.
“So it is a thing that has grown throughout the months,” Labbe said. This past month, we deposited $41,488 on simple sales tax and to give you something to go against which is our regular sales tax, with Dave Market and of them included in it, for the month it was $51,988.”
Labbe said he wanted to give the council some idea of what the simple sales tax was doing for them because he said people are getting on the internet and ordering stuff more and more and at this point, people can buy almost anything on there.
“And, it also gets shipped to their door but doing a comparison on that, it’s kind of astonishing,” said Labbe. “Looking at 40 to 45 percent of your sales tax coming in over the internet and that’s just for one month.”
