ArtsRevive Hosts 23rd Annual Roots and Wings Art Show

Last Thursday, ArtsRevive Cultural Arts Center hosted the 23rd Annual Roots and Wings Art Show, bringing significance to artists of various mediums who locally reside in Selma and those who previously resided in Selma that come back each year to attend the show.
The art show this year recognized mixed mediums featuring all types of art from paintings, drawings, acrylics, oil, photography, including quilting pieces among many other forms of art as well.
Becky Youngblood, who is the ArtsRevive Executive Director said last week’s show had the best attendance she’s seen since the shows have been held and that this year’s artwork was quite special.
“The artwork was extraordinary,” said Youngblood. “There were also 138 submissions and the judge of the show was Cathy Phares, who is from Homewood, AL.”
Youngblood said the show was also juried by Phares as well, which led to her choosing three artists for each category of the show’s five categories that consisted of Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, photography, printmaking and mixed media.
There was also one winning artist selected for the Best of Show and Peoples’ Choice.
The results of the 23rd annual Alabama Artists Roots and Wings art show consists of:
The top three artists within the drawing portion of contest being Robert Baynes, who came in first place for his drawing called “Who What When”, followed by the second winner, Connie Collier for her drawing “One View from the Wetumpka Crater Site.”
Charlie Longmire was the third-place winner for his drawing, “Madea”.
In the painting sector of the show, Mary McPherson came in first place for her painting called “Mr. Syrup” and Robert Baynes came in second place for his painting called “Hallelujah Good Tyme.
Donna Richardson was the third-place winner for her painting, “Focused: Gray Wolf.”
For the sculpture sector of the show, Mina Duffie came in first place for her sculpture piece called as “Gonggi- Nori, Kimberly Hughes Teri Zaccaro came in second place for her sculpture called date night.
Casey Roberts came in third place for her sculpture named “100 Day Quilt.”
As for the last two categories, Photography/ Printmaking and Mixed Media, Photography and Printmaking winners were Yolande Allen, who came in first place for her artwork, “Power”, Kenneth Boyd, was the second-place winner for his artwork “Driftwood and Shell.”
Dori Boyd fell in third place for his artwork, “Light Bathing”.
Within the mixed media sector, Tara Lee came in first place for her artwork named John Lewis: Nashville Prepared Me, and Sarah Tanner came in second place for her artwork named “Ted and Susie the Cat Chasers.”
Connie Collier was the third winner for her artwork named “Waiting for the school bus when I was young.” The Best of Show winner and the Peoples’ Choice winner was Jean Pearson for her artwork named “Back Home”.
All competing artists were congratulated for their artistic efforts and each sponsor who contributed to the event was recognized as well.
