Lake Uran Bates Sr., beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and respected military veteran, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Sunday, March 16, 2025. He was born on June 17, 1941 in Suttle, Alabama. Lake was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Bell and Charlie Bates; his siblings, Willie Bates, Virginia Bates, Ollie Johnson, Charles Bates Jr., Lillie Mae Melton, and Alphonso Bates. He is survived by his sister, Leola Bates; his children, Tanya (Bates) Shock and Lake Bates Jr., and Tamika Bates-Guerrier; nine grandchildren, Ashley Porcaro, Daeshon Heard, Gabrielle Shock, Makayla Shock, and Talia Shock, children of Tanya (Dr. CJ) Shock; Deangelo Bates, son of Lake (Johanna) Bates Jr.; Sydney Guerrier, Devin Guerrier, and Morgan Guerrier, children of Tamika (Patrick) Bates-Guerrier. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Neveah Staub, Giovanni Staub, and Dominic Staub, children of his granddaughter Ashley, along with a host of nieces and nephews.Lake Uran Bates Sr. was a hardworking man known for his wisdom, strong work ethic, and great love for his friends and family. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his priceless advice, lectures, musical abilities, creative talents, and unwavering love to his family. May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home, 2900 Citizens Pkwy, Selma, Al., with the Rev. Lionel Melton officiating. The family will begin receiving friends for visitation at 3 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Alabama National Cemetery with full military honors at a private service held at a later date.
