Voting Rights Bowl held in honor of Jubilee

Several schools partnered together to compete within the Voting Rights Bowl that was held at R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy this morning in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

About four to five students from each neighboring school like Keith Middle High School, Tipton Durant Middle School, Ellwood Christian Academy, Martin Middle School including students of R.B. Hudson partnered together to recall facts based upon the history of African Americans and the history of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Voting Rights Bowl was an interactive tournament that resulted in a win for each team but the overall scores of each school ranged from first, second, third, fourth and fifth place.

The first team who won first place based on a 70-point scorecard was the Keith Middle High School students.

The team that was picked for second place with a 68-point scorecard was the Tipton Durant Middle School students and the school that came in third place with a 54-point scorecard was the R.B. Hudson school students, falling in fourth place, was the Ellwood Christian Middle School that ended up with a 49-point scorecard.

For the fifth place winning spot, The Martin Middle School students took it home with a 44-point scorecard.

Each student from every school, despite where they were on the scoreboard, received a medallion for their hard work and their dedicated efforts to get each question asked correct.

English Language Teacher Quinnya Dower said she teaches seventh grade at R.B. Hudson said she was the organizer of this year’s event and she feels the event had a wonderful turnout and that everyone who was involved and participated learned something significant.

“I also would like each child to know that everyone is a winner today,” Dower said. “I encourage them to keep working and that they can do anything they put their mind to.”
